Course |
Island Challenge - start/finish Coogee Beach, circumnavigating Wedding Cake Island (weather permitting). If weather does not permit, course may be set inside the island.
Splash and Dash - circuit course inside Coogee Bay.
|
Conditions |
Coogee is a generally protected beach sitting inside Wedding Cake Island, and with long rock platforms heading south east, and a small one to the north.
But don't be fooled by this protection from the sea: this swim can be very bumpy. It's a swim in which no two strokes may be the same, given the chop that characterises this stretch of water. It makes the course very interesting, on top of the stunning nature of the swim around Wedding Cake Island. |
Years run, starters last time |
8th outing for this swim. Last season, there were 850 swimmers in the longer schlep around the island, and 276 in the shorter. Some doubled up. |
Prizes |
1, 2, 3, in all categories, Male/Female. Coogee usually offers very good spot prizes, too, including generous cash. But, you must be there to collect, and you must be wearing your Express Glass tattoo, which you'll be given at registration.
Wear it with pride, conscious of the opportunity it offers. Don't be one of the pathetic mugs to have their numbers called out, only to be ruled out of the prizes because they've already washed the sticker off their persons. |

Water safety |
Coogee SLSC
All swimming courses in the Express Glass Island Challenge and Express Glass Splash and Dash will be marked out with cans and will be patrolled by IRBs and surf ski paddlers. A fully equipped medical tent will be present on the beach with trained medical staff. A fluid station will be available.
Each competitor is responsible for his or her own physical condition and enters the event at his or her own personal risk. Any competitor who is still out on the Island Challenge course after 90 minutes will be asked to default and will be assisted to return to the start/finish via IRB.
The organisers reserve the right to change the 2.4km Island Challenge swim course on the day if it is deemed that weather conditions are too dangerous to swim around Wedding Cake Island. The amended course will be inside Coogee Bay and will be advised on the day of the event. |

Teams |
Teams are made up of four competitors. All members of a team must first be entered as individual swimmers. Team members may be of any age (above 13 years) and either sex. There are no provisions for age group teams or separate male and female categories.
Teams may enter either event or both events.
Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams based on the overall team time. All swimmers must finish to be eligible for team prizes.
Teams entered online must consist only of swimmers who have already entered individually online. Team members' individual entry (5-digit) registration numbers must be supplied with team entries.
Teams online entry deadline is one day earlier than individual online entry deadline. This is to allow for discrepancies and errors to be clarified. Team entries online close at midnight, Thursday, November 27, 2008.
After all team members have entered individually online, Team Manager must complete the Team Details form (see below) to register their team. Team details forms must include online registration id numbers of all team members (these 5-digit numbers are obtained when you enter on-line individually). Team entries will not be accepted without these registration id numbers.
Team affiliations will be noted alongside individuals' names on online entries progress list (see link below).
There are no team entries available on Race Day.

What a stunning swim this is! The main swim around Wedding Cake Island, we mean. The shorter swim is interesting because the water off Coogee can be bumpy. But the longer swim, if conditions allow the peloton to go around the island, is abslutely stunning.
Swimming around Wedding Cake Island is one of the most exhilarating experiences in ocean swimming in Sydney. The bottom around Wedding Cake is littered with rounded boulders on the inside, and with forests of weed and rock shelfs on the ocean side. There's a lot of sea life down there, all on display. It's enormous fun. |
