OCT 10, SAT: Hunter River Swim, Morpeth

OCT 17, SAT: Forresters Beach Island Swim & Board Paddle - Featured Swim
1.2 km, 11am - NSW Central Coast (Forresters Beach Board Riders + Wamberal SLSC) - Website - 2008 REPORT

forries08016th year for this swim, but the first time we've been able to tell you anything more about it in advance and to offer you entry online. Forresters is a stunning beach on the Central Coast popular with surfers at least since, according to Surfing World magazine in the 60s, it was a favourite of Midget Farrelly as a weekday surf spot, particularly for the bombie, which works when the swell gets up.

You can enter the ocean swim, the malibua (long) board paddle, the standing board paddle, the "iron man", which is a board paddle, a swim and a run, or multiple events. There also is a surfing contest, the Coke Memorial, which remembers not a can of coke, but one of the Forries surfers nicknamed Coke who passed away a few years back, after a difficult illness. This is how his cobbers remember him, and raise a bit of money for relevant charities along the way. Good boys, themselves!

Last season, this was one of the prettiest swims of the year: glorious, crystalline water over a very pretty, active reef. Not a long swim, but a beautiful swim. Nice bunch of mugs running it, too. They make their own trophies, which are collectors items.

Entry fee $20 for 1st event, then $10 for each other event you wish to enter. This is very good value for an ocean swim. Entry portal contains options for entering various events in different combinations.

NOV 29, SUN: Tweed River Swim (The Killer Swim) - Featured Swim
2.5km, 1.2km, 400m - Murwillumbah (Murwillumbah Brass Monkeys SC) - email Marc Vining - This is the classic pre-Xmas northern NSW swim. Do two of three swims, or just one, of 400m nominated time swim, or either longer distances. tweed river

Organisers say of conditions: "River swim, gentle tides, some assistance for half the course". Min. age 12.

This is "The Killer Swim", although Killer's cobbers by now are getting sick and tired heartily of seeing their retired prop colleague being promoted like this. But, hey! We don't make the rules on personality! We can't help it if 87 per cent of the weird and wayout stories we bring you on oceanswims.com derive from Killer's bizarre, idiosyncratic, eccentric behaviour and experiences. Who will forget Killer's quiet Sunday afternoon drink with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant? His encounter with a sheila in Port Vila harbour? His theatrical debut as a guard in what the Murwillumbah players described as "adult comedy"?

Last season, we finally made it to Murwillumbah for the Tweed River Swim, and didn't Killer lay it on! Highlight? Had to be Sunday afternoon on the deck of the Riverside Hotel listening to the blues/rock band fronted by James Thornbury, former front man in the 80s and 90s for Canned Heat. And while James wasn't at Woodstock with the band, his rendition of On the Road Again will leave you shivering, your goosebumps quivering in the early summer balmth, your eyes gushing for the grieving over your long lost youth. That's the view from the riverside deck above, looking down the swim course. Sigghhh ... We can't be there this season, but Killer will be, after his heart scare a few weeks back, just prior to turning 50, and, we're told that, since then, James T and his band have become Sunday arvo regulars at the Riverside, who sponsor the Tweed River Swim.

Killer and his cohorts swear blind that a weekend -- even just Sunday -- in Murwillumbah is a ripper of an experience. Ask him to tell you about Jimmy Page and Robert Plant...

- 2nd time for this event on the beautiful Bar Beach, between Merewether Baths and Cooks Hill SLSC in the north. This beach holds a special place in the oceanswims.com psyche: it was the scene both of our old man's greatest surfing achievement -- remind us to tell you of the day Rotten ol' Herbie "beat Bobby Newbiggin back to the beach" -- and our own: the day we ran 3rd in a belt race despite our line being caught under reef on the way out. It was also the spot where, at a surf carnival c. 1970, we met John Snow, the English fast bowler, at that time terrorising the Australian batting on the MCC tour.

newport logoJAN 3 , SAT: Pool to Peak, Newport - Featured Swim
2 km - Newport, northern Sydney beach (Newport SLSC)
- website and entries online - 2008 REPORT

This swim usually treks out from Newport beach towards the famed reef offshore, then back towards the northern headland of Newport beach, before heading back to the middle of the beach to the finish. The reef offers some protection from difficult conditions in certain directions.

Go to the website (link above), then follow the links back to oceanswims.com for online entry.
JAN 3, SUN: Captain Christie Classic - Gerringong
1.8km, 10am, near-South Coast beach (Gerringong SLSC) - website - registration at Gerringong SLSC, Werri Beach, start at Boat Harbour -- leave plenty of time to register then get around to Boat Harbour to the start. Course leaves Boat Harbour, then follows rock shelf back to Werri Beach. This is a lovely swim and a terrific day out. Gerringong SLSC makes visiting swimmers very welcome. It usually also runs a few associated events, eg a fishing competition, with the catch auctioned off in support of the club, a fashion parade, and a band adding to the atmosphere as you chaw on the barbie. Event marks a swim by the original Capt Christie, master of a boat moored in Boat Harbour, around to Werri Beach, many, many years ago. He bet one of his crew a bottle of whisky that he could do it. And he did.

JAN 26, TUE (AUSTRALIA DAY): Newcastle Harbour Swim - Featured Swim
1.4km, 700m, entries/registration closes 8:45am (700m - Stockton side), 9:45 for 1.4km (Queens Wharf, Newcastle side) (organised by Stockton SLSC). Website. One crossing of Newcastle Harbour, from Stockton Ferry Wharf to Queens Wharf, or two crossings, Queens Wharf to Queens Wharf via booees arrayed before Stockton wharf.

newcastlecourse08This is one of oceanswims.com's favourite swims. Why? Because as little tykes, our dream was to be a ferry boy on the Stockton Ferry. We spent our earliest years at Stockton, and you can still see our Nan's pitched roof whilst you're waiting for the ferry on the Newcastle side, although Nan doesn't live there any more. We spent our youths, too, crossing Newcastle Harbour on the Stockton Ferry. Our great grandad, Dadah, was an engineer on the ferry as well as being mayor of Stockton, in the days when places like Stockton had mayors.

Don't be fooled by the smooth-ish waters. There can be a current running through Newcastle Harbour, to be sure. Make sure you sight your target swell, for it will drag you one way or the other if you're not careful. Thus, it is a challenge and a lot of fun.

Make sure, if you're swimming in the 700m swim, that you check in on the Stockton side. You can't enter or register for this swim on the Newcastle side.

Prize money for Open Male, Female & Club Challenge only. 1st Place - $500, 2nd Place $ 300 and 3rd Place $100.

Please note that we accept only Visa and Mastercard. Attempts to use other cards will not succeed.

hawksnest061Two choices of swim: along the bay inside Port Stephens, then across the sand dunes (it's not that far, really), and along the ocean beach back to the surf club (That's the main event), or along the beach inside the bay, which is a gentle swim with weed tickling your belly (if you're like us, with a deep keel).

MAR 6 , SAT: Across the Lake, Coal Point-Belmont, Lake Macquarie - Featured Swim
3.8km, 9.30am, registration and finish at Belmont 16' Sailing Club (Swansea Belmont SLSC) - website - email. 50th year for this swim, which makes it, by our reckoning, the second oldest opean water swim in Stray'a, the oldest being Magnetic Island, which is well into 50+ years now. The remarkable thing about this swim, however, is that it still has involved some of the people -- at least one of the people -- who started it 50 years ago. We refer to one of the legends of surf life saving, Cliff Marsh (that's Cliff, on the left below). Cliff used to terrorise us kids -- os.c came out of neighbouring Swansea Caves surf club -- because lakemac0908he was the local examiner and we were scared he was going to put us through hoops in testing for our Bronze Medallions, etc. Our insructors told us Cliff was very, very strict. And he was, and so he should have been.

We've known Cliff since we were whippersnappers. And we also know that he ain't as scary as he was made out to be. You will find out yourself, because Cliff still runs the official briefings for the Across Lake Macquarie Swim, warning the punters of razorfish, which we took to be a joke when we first heard of them whilst standing in waist deep water at the start at Coal Point a few years back. But was wasn't joking. The Swansea Belmont Club usually gets into the water the day before to clear an entry and exit to and from the lake as best they can.

Lake Macquarie is a beautiful piece of water, as you can see from above. This swim is unique, too, in that it's a 3.8km in a straight line. That makes it a mind swim. Truly a classic, more people should do it. Now, with online entries offered for the first time, we can start to build up the numbers. If you enjoy your ocean swimming, and you relish a challenge, you should do this swim. Another thing: hardly anyone leaves this swim without a random prize. We've never seen so many.

Be early: you need to catch the ferry across the lake to the start. Registration closes at 8:30am.

Swim start and registration is on the grass next to the Belmont 18' Sailing Club, on the lake shore on the way around towards Belmont Hospital. Download the hard copy entry form for more details.

Barney passed away in October 1995 and his son, George, travels from Queensland each year to attend race day. Barney's daughter, Trish, who still lives in the area, also attends the swim each year.

Organisers say: "Freshwater is one of Sydney's most beautiful northern beaches. It is somewhat protected from some of the larger swells by the north and south headlands. White sands and crystal clear water help to ensure an enjoyable swim to be had by all. Post Race BBQ and refreshments will be available.

All entrants will receive a water bottle and swim cap. Prizes for male and female age group winners. Good spot prizes. Participants must be in attendance to collect prizes.

5km, 8am - Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach. Community event organised by Joanna Kyriazakos, Mermaid Swim Academy - email Jo or phone 0437 374 715.

coogeebondigoins0920This is one of those epic swims that cries out to be done. First run in 2002, it lasted just two years before falling over due to the myriad agencies and organisations involved in supporting it with water safety. Picked up again by Mermaid Jo last year, it is supported by Randwick and Waverley Councils and their Lifeguard services, inter alia.

This season, only individual swimmers take part (no teams), but swimmers do not need to be accompanied by a paddler.

A couple of points from the organisers -- there will be bag transportation from Coogee to Bondi, to take your gear for you from start to finish.

Swim is capped at 300 entrants, so don't leave your entry too long. You may miss out.

JUNE TBA, SUN: Convent to Main Beach - CANCELLED
1km, 10am, (Yamba SLSC with Clarence River Masters)

monavalelogoJUNE 20, SUN: Cold Water Classic, Mona Vale
1.2km, 10am, $25, Mona Vale Beach (Mona Vale SLSC) -- around the rocks to Bongin Bongin Bay.

We're tremendously excited by the Cold Water Classic, although we expect it will prove to be misnamed, for the water in late June may not be as cool as you might expect. Probably still around 20 deg C. What we're excited about is the prospect -- the reality -- of a swim in the cooler months. mv01Sydney is a terrific location for winter swimming, for the water generally doesn't get very cold at all. Indeed, our coldest water in recent years has come in those spasmodic cold spells that have wafted in in high summer. If this one works, then other clubs might take up the idea, and we can swim all year 'round!

Just four divisions in this event: Wetties and Naked (non-wetties), Male and Female. Free parking; Free soup kitchen. Register online or by mail only. There will be no new entries on race day.

Check in on race day at Mona Vale SLSC from 0830-0945 AEST.

Mona Vale is Glistening Dave's home beach, and he has spent many hours attempting to capcha it pitchorially in all its glory. mv05To help persuade you to do this swim on June 21, he has offered up some of his favourite Mona Vale pics, to give you an idea of how beautiful the place is, how moody, how mysterious, how changeable, how enigmatic, how ... Well, Dave gets carried away sometimes. He is an enormously emotional cove. Oh, that's another one ... how emotional Mona Vale is ...

Above, you can see the course of the Cold Water Classic ... from the high side of the "point" -- really a rock platform with an ocean pool dropped in the middle of it -- and below it, Mona Vale in melancholy mode. Come down on swim day, and we're sure Glistening Dave will give you a personal tour of his Mona Vale.

We urge all ocean swimmers to get down to Mona Vale and support this swim. Full marks to Mona Vale SLSC for bunging it on. We can't wait.

Just four divisions -- Wetsuits (wetties) and Naked (non-wetties, although you might be expected to wear conventional cossies should you wish), Male and Female. Swim entry $25.

Please note that we accept only Visa and Mastercard. Attempts to use other cards will not succeed.
