AUSSI Masters - NSW Masters Preso Ian Davis writes: "There are about 50 Masters clubs in the State, mostly in Sydney, but also quite a few in the Hunter and on the Central Coast, as well as Yamba, Part Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth, Armidale, Dubbo, the Blue Mountains, Oak Flats, Wollongong, Shoalhaven, Griffith and Canberra. On the far north coast, there are some clubs in NSW affiliated with the Queensland Branch. And there are, of course, Branches in the NT and all the other States. There are about 1600 registered Masters swimmers in the ACT and NSW, and around 7000 around Australia.

"There are a number of Fine Ocean Swimmers who are also Masters swimmers: Peter Thiel, Rose Saltman, the lovely Cecily, Cath Rogers, Peter Gregory come to mind, as well as plodders like myself.

"It seems to me that both FOSs and Masters swimmers can benefit from joining in each other's squads and events. Details of the clubs, their training venues and times and so on, as well as competitions, can be found on the MSNSW website.

"The next 18 months are a focus time for Masters swimming in Australia and NSW as the FINA World Masters Swim will be held in Perth at Challenge Stadium (with an open water swim) in April 2008, and the World Masters Games will be held in Sydney in October 2009 at Sydney Olympic Park, also with an open water swim. These two events may well be of interest to a number of ocean swimmers even if they are not particularly interested in Masers swimming generally."

EzySwim says: "Ezyswim caters for all ages and abilities We provide personal service, innovative programmes and results orientated instruction. But more than that, you will feel welcome. A friendly smile, familiar face and trusted reputation is what’s been attracting customers to us since 1979”.

This is the squad that oceanswims.com does, when he's not hunched over a computer screen. Run by Coach Angus, caters for all grades of swimmers. Hasn't been going long, so not big crowds at this stage. Offers a good workout. We like Drummoyne Pool - Crummy Drummy, as the Balmain types used to call it - because it's in a stunning location on the river under the Iron Cove Bridge. And ... it's salt water taken from the river (cleaned on the way through to the pool proper), which means blokes float in it better than they do in fresh water pools. Reason enough alone to give it a go, we reckon. Single squad $12.50 or $8 with any season or multi-visit pass. Includes pool entry.

"SOPAC Coaches" run these squads in the Olympic 2000 venue. It's a nice pool (at least, the main pool is) with a different water treatment system based on ozone rather than chlorine, so you don't come away with the all-pervasive odour of having been at a pool that's over treated. Distances 2km - 4km, depending on your speed and fitness. Good to see longer squads, which offer much more work than the standard one hour. $11 casual or $95 for a 10-swim card. Pool entry is included in the squad cost. Call 02 9752 3666 or email or website. Also contact John Murray (0418 293 519 or email) for info on SOPAC Masters.

"Slacker" swimmer Lara writes: "A rather pathetic group of us more ‘mature’ swimmers gather at Roselands swimming pool at 7:00 am on a Friday to churn up and down .... In spite of our coach, Col Robson, one day remarking that our attempts at butterfly made us look more like a group of ‘retarded moths’, we continue to assemble at the shallow end come rain hail or shine. And most importantly, so does Col. Pool entry is $ 5.00 plus $2.50 for a quality half-hour of stroke correction from the lovely Col who is always keen to share the woes of his errant golf swing, unsuccessful footy tips or recent speeding camera fines with a captive audience.

"Group size varies from two or three crazies on cold winter mornings (when everyone has had red wine and Thai takeaway the night before and just can’t be bothered) to about 10 when the weather is fine and the planets are aligned.

"We generally do a 200m warm up, any variety of drills to iron out our kinks (such as unbent elbows, poor kicking, exaggerated breathing or whatever the majority of us seem to be stuffing up that particular day), followed by a few sprints (which are ALWAYS met with a chorus of whinges and pleading for shorter distances and / or longer times), a medley or two, a quick post mortem ………. and then a hot shower ! We usually do 1.2 – 1.4 km.

"Ages of the punters range from 19 to 90 (ok, not quite 90 but probably late 50s). There is a wide range of fitness and abilities but the important thing is that we all have a good time. We put in the effort but none of us takes it too seriously. Some of the nicer outcomes is that friendships have been formed, you can justify that extra piece of cake or glass of wine during the week and many of us now compete (ok, I mean complete) in ocean swims …… oh and we are all better swimmers these days!!

"Ph 9789 9302. Outdoor 50 m and 25 m pools open all year round. Use of spa and segregated saunas is included in the entry price."

We know Coach Col, and he is very good.

Salt water (sea)

Sat-Sun

Coach John says: "Holidaying on the beautiful south coast of NSW and want some company to swim with in the ocean? Mollymook Beach is the place to go. Every Sat and Sun morning of the year there are a group of swimmers who meet in front of the Mollymook surf club at around 8.30am.

"Depending on conditions, the swim can be anywhere from 1.5 to about 3 ks. Its all very social and a lot of fun. Dolphins are usually in abundance all year round, while the occasional whale has come in close for a sticky beak at the swimmers.

"I know there are some who frown on wetsuits but all this winter our water temp has hovered around 14 degrees, so if you are down our way over winter and early spring, bring your wettie. By around Feb to march our water temp is a more comfortable 22 to 24 degrees and stays that way (usually) right through April and into May."

Coach John ensures they're a very social lot, too.

Informal group meets at Shellharbour SLSC, North Beach, dependent on water and surf conditions. Call Rob McAlister 0405 357 461. "Our very informal social group meets most Sunday mornings at 9am at the surf club and swims along the beach froreshore. Most of the group are suf club members and/or their families, however anyone is welcome to join in, provided they are confident and competent enough to swim in the surf. Swim fins can be used. During colder months, we try and refrain from wearing wetsuits wo we can feel a part of those crazy winter swimming brigade. After each swim, we relive the experience over a warm cup of tea, coffee or chocolate and on special occasions, such as birthdays, maybe a pastry or two. During the warmer months, the swim is generally finished before the regular surf club activities get under way and the only hazards are swimming into a stray surf craft of being swum over by a group of the club Nipper members as we traverse their swimming area. Overall good fun and a very relaxed atmosphere."

Informal swim group, starts and finished at Elwood Lifesaving Club. An anonymous information tells us: "This swim began a few years ago when we (a group of long course triathletes) realised that there is only so long one can swim pole-to-pole at Elwood - it's like doing your long ride on the velodrome! The Friday morning swim starts from the Elwood SLC. We head out to the right hand pole, turn left and swim the 1.6km "lap" directly down to the red navigation pole at Brighton marina entrance. Here we chew the fat for a few minutes then swim the same course in return. You chose whatever pace suits you - flat out or easy. There are no rules. The swim is on every Friday morning from October 26, 2007, right through summer.

"This is a long swim and can be difficult in rough conditions. This is not a regular coached session and is completely unsupported - no coaches, no lifegaurds and no turning bouys etc. It is definetly not suitable for inexperienced swimmers. You should be 100% confident in your ability in the open water, and to cover the distance in all conditions."

The James Squire Feedback

Send us your feedback on anything on which you'd like to vent your spleen ... so long as it's related to ocean and open water swimming. Loosely related, anyway. Maybe someone who has something to do with the feedback swims, or swam once upon a time. Or maybe they know someone who swims. Or they might live near a beach.

The best feedback email each week will receive a case of James Squire beer, courtesy of Malt Shovel Brewery.

Read feedback already received.
