A brand-new chapter in Australian open water swimming kicks off in the tropics.
Welcome to the first-ever Australian Cup Open Water event, set against the palm-fringed backdrop of the Darwin Waterfront Precinct. Warm water, a buzzing foreshore, and world-class racing all rolled into one, it doesn’t get much better.
The day starts early with the 5km Australian Cup, where the nation’s top open water swimmers dive in at 7 am to battle it out in the Top End. Local swimmers then get their chance to shine in the 500m Supersprint, a fast and friendly dash that’s as much about participation as it is about speed.
And then comes the big show: the 3km Knockout. A brand-new format for Aussie shores, it’s a tactical eliminator where swimmers race 1500m, 1000m, then 500m, each round cutting the field in half until only the toughest remain. It’s thrilling to watch, nail-biting to swim, and promises plenty of action for the crowd onshore.
This isn’t just an event, it’s the start of something bigger, a national series designed to grow the sport, inspire new swimmers, and put Australian open water racing on the world stage.
Whether you’re chasing titles, taking part in the community sprint, or cheering from the esplanade, Darwin is where the journey begins.
Fast, tropical, and full of energy, the Australian Cup has arrived.
