The Sydney Shire ocean swim is part of Sally Fitzgibbons four day International Beach Festival, with 1km and 2km swims on the cards. Get a swim in, then sit back and enjoy the events from sunrise to sunset.
The Sydney Shire Ocean Swim will be one of the first of the season, with a 1km and 2km event for those wishing to make a splash in the lead up to summer.
The event forms part of the International Beach Festival a four-day event showcasing the iconic Shire lifestyle, where sand meets sea.
The lineup includes holistic beach lifestyle events heroed by the Sydney International Women's Surf Pro, Ironwoman Invitational, Boardriders Battle, Pro Assist and U16 Challenge.
To promote a healthy and active lifestyle the community will be able to get involved and participate in the Shire Mile, Shire Ocean Swim, live fitness workouts, kids zone, market stalls and a Cinema by the Sea.
1km ocean swim
Starting outside the Elouera surf club, the rectangular 1km course sits inside the 2km course, heading east out through the break, before turning north, then west, south, east, north and the final leg west back through the waves to the shore.
2km ocean swim
Starting outside the Elouera surf club, the 2km course heads through the break before taking a sharp left north, rounding a set of buoys in a rectangle shape, and finishing with a left turn back through the surf to the finish.
While you're there
Australia's favourite daughter, surfing champion Sally Fitzgibbons, leads a festival lineup that has something for everyone in the family.
The events surrounding the swim run from sunrise to sunset, and include the Sydney International Women's Surf Pro, Ironwoman Invitational, Boardriders Battle, U16 Junior Women's Surf Challenge, Shire Mile, Workout Zone, Market Stalls and Cinema by the Sea.
Pack up the family, your week has been planned for you.
Travel and parking
It's perhaps the Shire's greatest asset€¦ free beach parking! As per usual, you need to either get there early or chance your luck later in the morning.
The event could draw big numbers, so leave early and be prepared to park a distance away.
The train goes all the way to Cronulla beach, so that's a legitimate option (albeit with a long walk after - or Uber) - after a long day in the Shire you'll be sleeping on the 1-hour journey back to the city.
