ResetThe Rip View Swim Classic is an open water swim event that occurs annually in Point Lonsdale on the tip of the stunning Bellarine Peninsula overlooking the famous entrance of the Port Phillip Bay commonly known as ‘The Rip.’
While ‘The Rip’ is famously known for its treacherous waters the swim courses for this event are well protected from the predominant winds and most swell, with the courses boating beautiful clean shallow waters.
The event offers 600m, 1.4km and 3.8km swims with the courses taking swimmers on a unique stretched-out layout that follows the curve of Lonsdale Bay inside the head of Port Phillip Bay.
In 2020 the Rip View Swim Classic introduced the 600m Groyne2Groyne “Legends” handicap race where swimming legends such as Sam Sheppard race swimmers aged between 10-15 years old.
Over 1000 participants hit the water for the Rip View Classic each year with it being a great way to enjoy a family day of ocean swimming followed by a day of exploring the beautiful Port Phillip Bay.
This event is the second event in the Great Victorian Swim Series.
The 600m Groyne2Groyne event is the shortest event at the Rip View Swim Classic and a great into for those new to open water swimming. The swim course is set in a horseshoe shape starting at the third groyne along Point Lonsdale front beach, before swimming out to the buoys and following them along the beach to the finish line at Point Lonsdale Beach, under the swings of the playground.
The 1.4 km Rip View Swim Classic is the blue ribbon event of the day. Swimmers will trace the shoreline of the Point Lonsdale Bight from the Springs carpark to the Swings in the main street of Point Lonsdale.
The 3.8km Rip View Swim Challenge is a favourite among triathletes and open water swimmers chasing a longer distance. Swimmers will start at Santa Casa beach before tracing the shallow waters and sandy shore of the Queenscliff/Lonsdale spit to the Springs Carpark (the start of the 1.4km event). From here swimmers will swim along the 1.4 km Rip View Swim Classic course before finishing at Point Lonsdale Front Beach.
Complimentary shuttle buses will operate on a loop between Queenscliff Ferry Terminal, Santa Casa Beach car park (for 3.8km swim start), Spring car park (1.4km swim start) and Point Lonsdale main street (registrations, finishing area, spectator zone)
