Named after Tasmania’s iconic marsupial, the Devil of a Swim lives up to its name, not because it’s fearsome, but because it’s wildly fun, wonderfully scenic, and a little bit cheeky. Held in the charming east coast town of Bicheno, this event captures the essence of grassroots ocean swimming: community connection, salty adventure, and a deep love for the water.
The swim takes place in crystal-clear Tasman Sea waters, with courses hugging Bicheno’s famous granite coastline, home to kelp forests, playful seals, and some of the most stunning marine life Tasmania has to offer. The conditions can be fresh (read: brisk!), but that’s part of the charm, this is raw, beautiful, and unfiltered coastal swimming at its best.
Founded by Olympic swimmer and Tassie legend Shane Gould, the event has grown into a local favourite that draws swimmers from across the island and beyond. Whether you’re tackling a short splash or going the distance, the Devil of a Swim delivers a challenge wrapped in spectacular scenery and backed by a passionate, supportive community.
It’s a swim that celebrates not just the sport, but the spirit of the place, and once you’ve felt the chill of the water and the warmth of the welcome, you’ll be back for more.
