The Captain Christie Ocean Swim isn’t just a swim, it’s a story, a tradition, and a challenge steeped in salty legend. Drenched in local lore, this point-to-point coastal classic dates all the way back to 1882, when Captain William Earnest Bartholomew Christie took on a sailor’s dare to swim from Gerringong Boat Harbour to Werri Beach, in full uniform, no less. The prize? A bottle of the finest whisky. And yes, he won.
Today, swimmers retrace that legendary route over 1.8km of stunning South Coast coastline, starting at the sheltered harbour and rounding the rugged headland into Werri Beach. It’s a swim that weaves history, community, and coastline into one unforgettable experience.
It’s not your average ocean swim; it’s a South Coast secret with a big heart and even bigger scenery. A little challenging, a lot rewarding, and the kind of story you’ll be telling long after you towel off.
If you’re chasing a swim with soul, scenery, and a splash of legend, this is it.
Gerringong’s coastline offers crystal-clear water, dramatic cliffs, and generally light swell in March. The route starts in the protected Boat Harbour and tracks north along the rocks to Werri Beach. Expect 21–23°C water and a gentle to moderate push with the swell.
The course is supported by experienced surf lifesavers and suits confident swimmers looking for a mid-length, scenic point-to-point.
Wetsuits welcome. The swim is exposed in parts but typically runs with the swell. IRBs and board paddlers will line the course. You’ll need good open-water confidence and a sense of adventure.

Gerringong is just a short, scenic drive south of Kiama, making it ideal for a day trip or a salty weekend escape. Whether you’re a local or coming from Sydney or Wollongong, getting here is easy, with plenty of coastal charm waiting at the end of the road.
Most swimmers choose to park at Werri Beach, where the swim finishes. From there, you can catch the shuttle bus or take a relaxed walk to the start line at Boat Harbour. Both the start and finish sites have basic facilities and great viewing spots for family and friends.
If you’re coming by public transport, Gerringong Station is on the South Coast Line, with regular train services from Sydney, Wollongong, and Kiama. From the station, it’s about a 20-minute walk to Boat Harbour or a short cab/rideshare to either end of the course.
No matter how you get there, leave a little extra time to soak in the views, chat with fellow swimmers, and get your bearings, because this event is just as much about the vibe as it is about the swim.
Gerringong is the kind of town that invites you to slow down, towel off, and stay awhile. After your salty dash from Boat Harbour to Werri, reward yourself with a coffee at Clay or a cold one at Stoic Brewing, both local favourites with serious post-swim vibes.
Feeling adventurous? Wander the Gerringong to Kiama Coastal Walk, where rolling headlands, sweeping ocean views, and the occasional sea eagle make it feel like you’re still in the swim. Or, if relaxing’s more your speed, stretch out on the grass near Werri Lagoon, grab a takeaway bite, and watch the waves roll in.
For something more indulgent, book a long lunch at one of the nearby wineries or cafes with views over the escarpment and sea. Think fresh local produce, a crisp glass of white, and ocean stories flowing as freely as the wine.
Better yet, stay the night. With beachside cottages, cosy Airbnbs, and boutique stays around town, Gerringong is made for a mini-break with a side of ocean swimming.
It’s not just a swim, it’s a whole weekend waiting to happen.
