The Lake Macquarie Point Swim serves up the perfect mix of calm conditions and sporty spirit. Set on the sparkling Speers Point foreshore, this lake swim is a favourite for anyone keen to dip into open water without the swell, chop, or sea creatures that come with ocean swims.
New to open water? This is your ideal starting point. The water’s flat, the course is well-marked, and the vibe is all about encouragement over ego. Seasoned triathlete? You’ll love the chance to test your early-season fitness in a fast, controlled environment.
Take on the 600m or 1.5km swim solo, or kick it up a notch with the Aquathlon (a swim-run combo that keeps things interesting). There’s a strong sense of community here, everyone’s cheering, everyone’s smiling, and the local crowd brings the energy.
It’s the kind of event where you can race hard or cruise comfortably, then hang out lakeside with a coffee and a grin. Whether you’re chasing a time or just chasing a good time, the Lake Macquarie Point Swim delivers.
Lake Macquarie is the largest saltwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere and offers protected, calm water that’s perfect for a measured swim. Conditions are typically glassy in the morning, with temps around 22–24°C in March.
No surf, no swell, just you, your stroke, and the wide blue of the lake.
Wetsuits optional. The lake is warm and calm but still requires open water confidence. This event is ideal for anyone not quite ready for surf, or those prepping for multisport season. IRBs and on-water support provided.

Speers Point is just a 25-minute drive from Newcastle and makes for a breezy day trip from most of the Hunter Region. There’s plenty of free parking near the foreshore, playground, and parklands, but it’s always a good idea to arrive early if you’re bringing the crew or planning to stay the day.
Coming by public transport? You can catch a train to Booragul Station on the Hunter Line, which is just over 2km from Speers Point, an easy walk or short bike ride away. Alternatively, local buses run regularly from Glendale, Warners Bay, and Newcastle Interchange, with stops just a short stroll from the lakefront.
Once you’re there, it’s all laid-back lake vibes. The event hub sits right on the grass near Speers Point Jetty, with toilets, shade, water stations, and heaps of space to spread out. The shared paths are perfect for a warm-up walk or post-swim recovery stroll, and there’s even a playground for the kids to burn off any extra energy.
Bring your swimmers, your runners, and your picnic rug. Speers Point is made for swim day fun.
Make the most of your swim day by soaking up everything Speers Point has to offer. Start with brunch at Pippi’s at the Point, where you can enjoy water views and a solid post-swim feed, or grab a coffee and brekky roll from Table 1 Espresso, a local favourite with plenty of options to refuel.
The lakeside path is perfect for a warm-down walk or a family bike ride, and if you’ve brought the crew along, the Speers Point Playground (one of the biggest and best in NSW) is an absolute winner with kids of all ages.
Settle in for a picnic on the foreshore, stretch out on the grass, or bring a stand-up paddleboard for a little extra time on the water. With toilets, shady trees, BBQ areas, and wide-open space, it’s the kind of spot that turns a swim morning into a full lake day.
Whether you hang around for lunch, kick a footy in the park, or just soak up the lakeside serenity, Speers Point delivers the post-swim chill in spades.
