About Black Rock Beach

Black Rock Beach is located along Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay, just a 20-minute drive from the CBD.

A favourite among Victorians during the warmer months, this picturesque beach offers a peaceful escape from the bustle of the city. Despite its proximity to the busy Beach Road, Black Rock feels wonderfully secluded, protected by a vegetated bluff that creates a sense of calm and privacy, as if it’s just you, the sand, and the sea.

This quiet and serene stretch of coastline is a hidden gem within Melbourne’s iconic bay beaches.

Perched above the beach sits the Black Rock Surf Lifesaving Club, established in 1913. The clubhouse overlooks the bluffs and offers sweeping views across Port Phillip Bay, a reminder of the beach’s long-standing connection to the local community and surf lifesaving tradition.

A seawall with a concrete pathway runs the length of the beach and beyond, making it a great spot for a scenic walk or for friends and family to watch on while you enjoy your swim. Whether you’re there for a leisurely dip, a training session, or a relaxing stroll, Black Rock Beach perfectly blends natural beauty with local charm.

How to get there

Parking is available at the Black Rock Car Park, located just up from the surf club. The car park operates ticketed parking from 8 am to 8 pm, at a rate of $5.30 per hour or $16.80 for the day. Additional street parking can be found along Beach Road and in the surrounding side streets, though spaces can fill quickly on warm summer days.

For those travelling by public transport, buses 825 and 922 both service the area, stopping a short walk from the beach. You can also take the Sandringham train line and connect to one of these buses for an easy trip down to the bay.

While you're there

While there isn’t a huge amount to do around Black Rock Beach, that’s exactly what makes it so special. Tucked quietly within Melbourne’s bayside suburbs, it’s far from the hustle and bustle of the city and lacks the tourist crowds of some of Australia’s more famous beaches. Instead, Black Rock offers a peaceful retreat, the kind of place where you can feel like you’ve escaped the world, even if just for a morning swim.

A short stroll up the road brings you to Half Moon Bay, home to the historic HMVS Cerberus, a colonial-era naval vessel scuttled in shallow water. Resting in just five metres of depth, it’s easily visible from the surface and makes for a fascinating snorkel, dive, or swim from shore.

After your swim, you’ll find several great spots nearby for coffee or a bite to eat. Local favourites include Black Drop Espresso & Wine, The Colonel’s Son, and Café Odo Beer & Wine, all offering relaxed vibes and excellent menus, the perfect way to round out a morning by the bay.
