The Great Bayside Swim is the kind of community swim that has something for everyone, from toe-dippers to tide-chasers. Held in the heart of Melbourne’s beachside Brighton, this swim brings together families, first-timers, and seasoned ocean swimmers for a classic Aussie summer’s day by the bay.
Previously known as the Great Australia Day Swim, it’s now a refreshed take on a long-standing favourite. Whether you’re diving in for the 200m splash or taking on the full 2.5km challenge, you’ll be swimming with hundreds of like-minded ocean lovers, all against the backdrop of the iconic Brighton Beach.
There’s music, food, local market stalls, and a buzz in the air. Even better, every entry supports the Brighton Rotary’s community projects, so you’re doing good while soaking up the good vibes.
The swim takes place in the calm, protected waters off Middle Brighton Pier. This bay setting offers ideal conditions for new swimmers and juniors, with generally mild swell and water temps around 20–22°C in late January.
The event is known for its accessibility, safety, and low-stress environment, perfect for making that jump from pool to open water, or simply enjoying a splash without the pressure.
Wetsuits are welcome, especially if you feel the chill, though January temps are usually swim-suit friendly. Swimmers must feel confident completing their chosen distance without assistance. Plenty of water safety personnel will be on hand.
9:00am – 2.5km swim start
10:00am – 1.4km Bayside swim start
Middle Brighton is easily accessed by public transport (close to Brighton Beach Station) and has paid parking options nearby. Bring friends and family to cheer you on from the pier or soak up the summer atmosphere on the beach.
After your swim, take a selfie with Brighton’s famous bathing boxes, then wander along the beach trail or grab a bite at one of Brighton’s many beachside cafés. It’s the perfect excuse to spend the day in one of Melbourne’s prettiest coastal pockets.
