The Toowoon Bay ocean swim is a perfect excuse to get out of the city for a day and enjoy the beauty of NSW's Central Coast.
Toowoon Bay, just south of The Entrance, is located about 90 minutes away from the centre of Sydney.
It's renowned as one of the safer beaches on the Central Coast due to it being protected by natural land formations to the north and the south.
It's safe, it's not too long, and the Toowoon Bay ocean swim is the perfect way for beginners to introduce themselves to ocean swimming.
The Toowoon Bay Ocean Swim is a community-run event, with the day hosted by the Entrance Amateur Swimmers Club and the Toowoon Bay SLSC.
The event aims to bring people together, promote the local community, and to increase the exposure of the benefits of living a fit and healthy lifestyle.
All proceeds raised from the event also go straight back to the people, with the money to be spent on rescue and safety equipment, and water-based educational programs.
So if you're keen on getting a start on ocean swimming, try out the Toowoon Bay Ocean Swim and support the local community.
There are three swim distances in total as part of the Toowoon Bay Ocean Swim.
You can take part in a 400m event, a 1km event and a 2km event, or choose two or three.
The beauty of the swim course location is that it's a gentle swim.
There can be a bit of a swell rolling through the bay entrance, but that's probably not going to raise the difficulty factor of this swim too much.
Because it's sheltered by reef and the curve of the bay, there's unlikely to be many rips to contend with either.
All in all, the Toowoon Bay Ocean Swim is the perfect swim to ease yourself into these kinds of events.
It's all for the 8-12 year olds in this 400m ocean swim that is just long enough to make it a challenge for the little ones, and allow the slightly older kids to really give it a bash!
Getting started in ocean swimming? The 400m swim around the buoys is the perfect place to start your journey.
Perfect for beginners, or as a warm-up if you're doing the 2km, the 1km swim is a lazy swim around a course laid out by buoys.
A lovely swim in the bay around the buoys. Make it your sole goal for the day or pair it up with the 1km swim to clock up 3km for the day.
Golfers, we've got you covered with the Shelley Beach Golf Club in striking distance to the club - in fact you could wheel your bag from your car parked at the beach.
It's heavily residential around the beach, so not a lot to do on foot if you want to leave the beach.
You can head up the road to Two Birds Gallery Cafe (corner Pacific St and Bay Road), a little bit further to Coast89 Cafe or The Bay Cafe (or the pie shop next door) - all these are on Bay Road heading away from the surf club.
There are three beach carparks surrounding the surf club and loads of on-street parking in nearby residential streets.

Upon arrival, all swimmers must check in and receive their official race number, timing bracelet and race cap. This cap must be worn during each event.
