About Bathers Beach

Bathers Beach, also known as Whalers Beach, is located in Fremantle between the WA Maritime Museum Precinct and Challenger Harbour, about a 40-minute drive from the Perth CBD.

Part of a coastline steeped in maritime history, Bathers Beach has been a significant site since the early days of European settlement. On October 8, 1829, Captain Charles Fremantle landed here to “take possession” of the western part of the continent. Later that same year, the Marquis of Anglesea was wrecked during a storm after dragging her anchors on the beach, an event that led to the naming of the rocky southern promontory as Anglesea Point.

Today, Bathers Beach is a favourite local spot for swimming, kite surfing and stand-up paddling, thanks to its calm, sheltered waters and easy access from the Fremantle town centre.

The beach is also home to the Kidogo Arthouse and the Bathers Beach Art Precinct, a creative hub that showcases some of Western Australia’s most celebrated sculptors, painters, photographers, Indigenous artists and designers. This vibrant blend of art, history and ocean culture makes Bathers Beach one of Fremantle’s most distinctive and beloved coastal landmarks.

How to get there

There are several car parks surrounding Bathers Beach within the Fremantle Harbour precinct. Most are metered, but you’ll also find a few free options with hourly limits if you don’t mind a short walk.

If you’d rather skip the drive, getting to Bathers Beach by public transport is easy. Take the Train Line 82 or Bus Line 910 to Fremantle Station. From there, hop aboard the free Fremantle Blue CAT bus, which will take you directly to the beach and drop you within steps of the sand.

While you're there

Bathers Beach is home to Perth’s only absolute beachfront restaurant, the iconic Bathers Beach House, the perfect place to unwind after an ocean swim. Relax on a sun lounger with your toes in the sand, a cocktail in hand, and a bite to eat as you take in sweeping views of the Indian Ocean and the beach’s white sands.

After your swim, take some time to explore the vibrant Bathers Beach Art Precinct, a creative hub filled with open studios, galleries and workshops. The area is brimming with local talent, from sculptors and painters to photographers, Indigenous artists and designers.

Highlights include the J Shed, Roundhouse Studios, Arthur Head Heritage Site, and the Kidogo Arthouse, all within a short walk from the beach. Many of these spaces offer interactive workshops and classes, perfect for those wanting to unleash their inner Picasso or take home a unique piece of Fremantle art.

Just north of the beach sits the historic Round House, Western Australia’s first gaol, built in 1831. From its lookout, you’ll find one of the best views over Bathers Beach and the harbour. Each day at 1 pm, a cannon is fired, a tradition that dates back to Fremantle’s early maritime days and one that’s well worth sticking around to see.

For those looking to connect more deeply with the area’s cultural roots, the Manjaree Walking Trail offers a scenic and educational journey through the Aboriginal heritage of the coastline. The trail highlights the significance of this location as a traditional meeting and trading place for Noongar people, weaving together stories of land, sea, and community that have shaped Fremantle’s identity for thousands of years.
