About Sorrento Beach

Sorrento Beach sits on the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula, overlooking the calm, sparkling waters of Port Phillip Bay. Just a short stroll from Sorrento’s historic township, this sheltered beach is known for its soft golden sand, turquoise shallows, and postcard-worthy views across the bay. It’s a favourite for families, casual swimmers, and open-water enthusiasts looking for gentle conditions, easy access, and a scenic place to clock their laps.

One of the earliest European settlements in Victoria, Sorrento carries deep historical roots dating back to the 1800s, with its limestone buildings and heritage streetscape adding charm to any beach day. Paired with the relaxed coastal village atmosphere, boutique shops, and shady foreshore reserves, Sorrento Beach offers the perfect blend of coastal leisure and seaside sophistication.

The naturally sheltered position inside Port Phillip ensures the water remains calm for most of the year, making it ideal for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and slow, scenic snorkels along its shallow reefs. With its slipway, jetty, and long stretches of walkable coastline, Sorrento is also a favourite launch spot for training swims, especially for those looking for predictable, low-impact ocean conditions.

For ocean swimmers, Sorrento has become a beloved meeting point. Its protected waters make it a year-round option for squad sessions, casual dips, and longer bay circuits. The Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club patrols the front beach during the summer months, adding an extra layer of comfort for swimmers heading out for a relaxed, enjoyable swim.

How to get there

Reaching Sorrento Beach is simple, whether you’re travelling from Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, or even from across the bay.

By car, Sorrento is approximately a 90-minute drive from Melbourne via the Mornington Peninsula Freeway. Parking is available along the foreshore with numerous car parks on The Esplanade and at the Sorrento Foreshore Reserve. On sunny weekends and summer holidays, spots fill quickly; arriving early is always a good idea.

By public transport, catch the train to Frankston Station, then transfer to the 788 bus, which runs directly through the peninsula and stops in central Sorrento, only a short walk from the beach.

From Queenscliff, the Searoad Ferries service provides a scenic 40-minute crossing that drops passengers right at the Sorrento terminal. From there, it’s a pleasant 10-minute walk along the waterfront to the beach.

While you're there

After your swim at Sorrento Beach, allow time to explore everything this beautiful coastal pocket has to offer.

Take a walk along the historic Sorrento Pier, where you can watch boats drift in the marina or cast your eyes across the bay towards Queenscliff. Keep an eye out for Australian Fur Seals and pods of dolphins, which are often spotted cruising through the deeper water beyond the pier.

Sorrento Foreshore Reserve is ideal for post-swim picnics, with shaded lawns, barbecues, and wide grassy areas perfect for stretching out and soaking in the coastal views. If you’re keen for a stroll, follow the scenic cliff-top paths that link Sorrento to Portsea, offering panoramic vistas across Port Phillip Bay.

Foodies are spoiled for choice. After drying off, wander up to Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento’s lively shopping strip, where you’ll find award-winning bakeries, boutique cafés, gelato bars, wine bars, and restaurants. Whether it’s a hot post-swim coffee, a long lunch, or an afternoon treat, you’ll find something delicious within minutes of the beach.

If you’re staying local, Sorrento Back Beach (on the ocean side) is also worth a visit for its rugged cliffs, rolling surf, and spectacular lookout points, though this beach is far less suitable for swimming compared to its calm bay-side counterpart.
