About Williamstown Beach

Williamstown Beach is one of Melbourne’s finest bayside spots, located along the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail and offering sweeping views across the stunning Port Phillip Bay.

Originally established in 1837 as Melbourne’s first seaport, Williamstown has evolved from its industrial roots into one of the city’s most charming seaside suburbs. Today, it blends a relaxed, village-like atmosphere with a vibrant café culture and a touch of maritime history.

The foreshore is lined with inviting cafés, fish and chip shops, and convenience stores, making it easy to grab a post-swim snack or spend a full day soaking up the coastal vibe. The calm waters and sandy shoreline make it popular with swimmers, families, and locals alike.

At the western end of the beach sits the Williamstown Surf Life Saving Club, founded in 1922. The club patrols the beach during the summer months, helping to keep swimmers safe and fostering a strong local surf lifesaving community.

Williamstown is also one of the few beaches in Melbourne to offer free hire of beach wheelchairs, helping make the bay accessible to everyone and giving those with mobility challenges the chance to enjoy the sand and sea.

With its easy access, safe swimming conditions, and relaxed seaside charm, Williamstown Beach remains a beloved destination for both ocean swimmers and those looking to enjoy a day by the bay.

How to get there

Williamstown Beach is easily accessible by public transport, making it a convenient spot for a swim or a day by the bay. Both bus routes 471 (Sunshine – Williamstown) and 472 (Moonee Ponds – Williamstown) stop close to the beach, while the Williamstown Line train gets you within a short 500-metre walk from Williamstown Beach Station straight down to the sand.

For those driving, there’s plenty of ticketed parking available at the western end car park and along The Esplanade, with rates around $3 per hour or $11.70 for the day. There’s also some free street parking in the surrounding side streets off The Esplanade, though these spots can fill up quickly on sunny weekends and during summer, so arriving early is recommended.

Williamstown Beach also sits along the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail, making it a popular stop for cyclists and walkers. You’ll find bike racks, shaded picnic areas, and plenty of nearby cafés, perfect for relaxing after your swim or ride.

While you're there

If you haven’t had your fill of the water after your ocean swim, head over to the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary for a peaceful snorkel. Stretching across 30 hectares of protected coastal waters, Jawbone has been safeguarded for more than 80 years, preserving a rich underwater world of seagrass meadows, colourful reef fish, and marine invertebrates. It’s the perfect unspoilt spot to float, explore, and unwind.

Once you’ve dried off, slip into your walking shoes and make your way to Ferguson Street Pier, where you’ll be treated to one of Melbourne’s most picturesque views. From here, the city skyline rises in the distance, framed by calm bay waters dotted with yachts and fishing boats, a scene that perfectly captures Williamstown’s mix of maritime charm and urban connection.

Just a short stroll from the beach, the Williamstown Botanic Gardens offer a tranquil escape beneath the trees. Opened in 1860, the gardens are among Victoria’s oldest, featuring rare and significant species, a graceful palm avenue, and a beautiful ornamental pond, a peaceful contrast to the bustling foreshore.

Steeped in maritime history, Williamstown was once a humble fishing village and Melbourne’s first seaport. To step back in time, visit the HMAS Castlemaine, moored at Gem Pier. Aboard this restored World War II minesweeper, you’ll uncover stories of Australia’s naval past and the early days of sea voyages aboard the tall ship Enterprize.

After a day of swimming and exploring, you’ll find no shortage of spots to refuel. Locals love Sebastian, a beachside favourite serving up delicious meals with stunning bay views. For something quick and casual, Fifi’s By The Beach and The Kiosk by d’Asporto are perfect for a post-swim coffee or snack before you head home.
