The Cook Community Classic returns to the Shire this year after two years of hiatus due to Covid-19.
It’s part of a multi-sport carnival now in its 15th year that consists of a series of activities including a community carnival, a fundraising raffle, and this ocean swim. Local MP, the Hon. Scott Morrison is the event patron.
‘The Classic’ provides a fundraising platform for St George and Sutherland Shire community groups -including sports clubs, local charities, school P&Cs and other community organisations. Water safety is provided by the Bate Bay surf lifesaving clubs.
This event offers two different swim distances; 1km for 10 years and over and a 2km swim for 13 years and over.
There are cash prizes up for grabs for both swims in the male/female open category as well as age groups.
There are two circuit swims at Cronulla Beach.
Cronulla Beach is partially protected from the west and southerly weather by Cronulla Point and Shark Island.
While it is partially protected, there are still banks, gutters and potential rips if the swell is up. There is also a runout in the corner along the rocks.
Both the 1km and 2km ocean swim courses are sheltered from the elements for the most part and follow a circuit around the buoys. The 1km ocean swim is the perfect swim for beginners.
Late entries open at Cronulla Surf Club from 8:00am with 1km registrations closing at 8:30am and 2km closing at 9:30am.
Once you finish your swim, explore the community festivities and enter the fundraising raffle, then grab a bite at one of the beachside cafes and restaurants.
Cronulla Shire offers free 3-hour parking along the beach.
If you don’t want to drive from the city, you can catch the train as it stops at Cronulla Beach and takes roughly one hour from Sydney CBD.
