The Dave Winner Beach to Bombie Swim isn’t just about ocean fitness; it’s a tribute to community spirit, coastal beauty, and a man who represents both. Named in honour of Coalcliff SLSC Life Member Dave Winner, this 2km swim is a much-loved local event with soul.
The course starts on the sands of Coalcliff Beach and heads out to the “Bombie”, a reefy surf break etched into Illawarra surf culture. It’s a salty, scenic swim with a strong surf club heart, set against the dramatic coastline of the NSW South Coast.
But it’s the story behind the swim that truly moves people. In 2021, Dave survived a near-fatal surfing accident at Coalcliff that left him a partial quadriplegic. Thanks to the swift actions of bystanders and their CPR skills, he was pulled from the water and airlifted to safety.
Despite his injury, Dave remains a Patrol Captain, chief training officer, and a driving force behind the club. His courage, resilience, and ongoing service continue to inspire everyone who knows him.
This swim honours Dave’s legacy, and the power of community in and out of the surf.
Expect friendly faces, a festive vibe, and the kind of post-swim connection that stays with you. Afterwards, join Dave and the crew for lunch at Wombarra Bowlo, because sharing stories is part of the tradition, too.
