Due to the storms and extended power outages to critical infrastructure in the Lower Hunter last week, the Newcastle Harbour water quality has been assessed by relevant authorities as very poor.
With this information, the Stockton SLSC has made the decision to cancel our iconic Newcastle Australia Day Harbour Swim event for this year.
While it is disappointing for our local community, the open swim community and our club, safety is paramount.
We know it is a bucket list experience for our swimmers and for those already registered, we will honour your registration in next year's event.
Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support of our Surf Club and its commitment to protecting our community.
President, Paul Bernard
Stockton SLSC
The Newcastle Harbour Swim is a bold, brilliant, and uniquely Novocastrian way to kick off your Australia Day. Where else do you get to swim across a working harbour, with tugboats, ferries, and waterfront spectators cheering you on from both sides?
Launching from Queens Wharf, this event gives you front-row views of Newcastle’s evolving skyline, historic port, and iconic working wharves. It’s an urban swim with a difference, a blend of challenge and charm that makes it one of the region’s most memorable open water experiences.
With two distance options, it’s accessible to most swimmers, whether you’re taking on your first harbour crossing or looking for a fast, splashy hit-out to start the day. The vibe is electric, with the buzz of the crowd lining the foreshore, music pumping, and a strong sense of local pride.
Run by the dedicated crew at Stockton Surf Life Saving Club, the event isn’t just about the swim; it’s about supporting surf lifesaving and giving back to the community. Your entry helps fund vital safety programs, beach patrols, and youth development in the region.
So, whether you’re in it for the challenge, the cause, or the unbeatable view mid-channel, the Newcastle Harbour Swim is a standout start to your Australia Day. Salty, social, and seriously iconic.
Newcastle Harbour is mostly protected, with slight tidal movement and limited swell. The swim runs across the channel from Queens Wharf to Stockton and back (for the 1.4km). The water is flat but can be choppy depending on wind and tide.
Water temps sit around 22–24°C in late January, perfect for a skins swim, but wetsuits are welcome too.
Harbour swims require strong sighting and open water confidence. Wetsuits are allowed but not required. Lifeguards, IRBs and paddlers cover the full course.

The Newcastle Harbour Swim kicks off from Queens Wharf, right in the heart of the city. It’s a central, vibrant location with plenty of transport options and a buzzing atmosphere that makes the event day feel like a real celebration.
If you’re coming by public transport, Queens Wharf is just a short walk from Newcastle Interchange, where you can connect via train, light rail, or bus services. It’s the easiest and most stress-free way to get to the swim, especially with road closures and increased traffic on Australia Day.
For those driving in, there’s street parking and paid parking stations nearby, just be sure to arrive early, as spots fill up fast. Carpooling with your swim crew is a great option too.
Important note: Newcastle Ferry services may be affected during the swim, so be sure to check the latest transport updates or plan alternative routes across the harbour if needed.
On site, you’ll find bag drop facilities, changerooms, and plenty of space to relax before and after your swim. With cafés, restaurants, and shaded areas all close by, it’s a great place to settle in and enjoy the post-swim buzz.
Whether you’re local or travelling in for the event, Queens Wharf is easy to access and perfectly placed for a harbour swim you won’t forget.
You’ve crossed the harbour, now it’s time to kick back and enjoy everything Newcastle has to offer on Australia Day.
Start your recovery with a bacon & egg roll or a strong coffee from one of the many local cafés lining the foreshore. There are plenty of top spots to grab a bite and watch the harbour come to life. Whether you’re in the mood for a sit-down brekky or a takeaway toastie on the go, there’s something for every swimmer’s post-race cravings.
Stick around after your swim to soak up the Australia Day celebrations, with live entertainment, market stalls, family activities, and a festive buzz that fills the city. Foreshore Park and Nobbys Beach are just a short stroll away if you want to stretch out on the grass, take a dip, or catch some of the community events happening throughout the day.
Make the most of your morning by exploring the Newcastle Memorial Walk, checking out the Newcastle Museum, or just wandering the waterfront promenade with your towel slung over your shoulder and your medal around your neck.
Whether you’re local or visiting, Newcastle puts on a show for Australia Day, and after a harbour swim like that, you’ve earned front-row seats.
