Merewether NSW
At the tables near the Baths at Merewether
Smackerels swim at Merewether and meet at the tables near Merewether Baths on weekday mornings at 6.30am and weekend mornings at 7:00am.
Our regular swim, when conditions permit, is to jump off the back of the Baths and swim out past the breakers north to Dixon Park Beach, and return to Merewether Beach, about 1.5km return. Longer distances and different routes depend on conditions.
The entry to the ocean is from a rock shelf. There can be no change of mind or return to the rocks, once in the ocean and it’s a 700m swim around the rocks to the Beach if you change your mind.
Merewether Beach has a hazard rating of 7/10 which is moderately high risk. It features strong rips and higher waves breaking on an outer bar. We recommend this swim for experienced ocean swimmers only (except on perfectly flat days) and we reserve the right to preclude you from swimming with us, if we are not aware of your ability.
During winter some of us swim with Merewether Mackerals Winter Swimming Club at 7:45 in the Baths and occasionally head to the Ocean afterwards.
Our name is derived from being Summer Mackerels….Smackerels!
