Coolangatta Beach sits at the southern tip of the Gold Coast and blends old-school seaside charm with iconic sandy stretches and world-class surf. The suburb takes its name from the schooner Coolangatta, wrecked off the coast in 1846, and today it’s a lively hub for both ocean swimmers and surfers.
Coolangatta hosts two headline events. The Cooly Classic Ocean Swim traces a spectacular route through some of Australia’s most famous breaks, Snapper Rocks, Rainbow Bay, Greenmount and Kirra, treating swimmers to clear water, rolling swells and postcard views. The beach is also home to the legendary Coolangatta Gold, a gruelling 41.8 km endurance epic where elite Ironmen and Ironwomen test themselves across surf ski, board, swim and run along this dramatic coastline.
The local community is equally vibrant. The Cooly Cobia’s, a social ocean-swim crew, head off every Sunday at 8:00 am from Coolangatta Beach, choosing an out-and-back to either Kirra or Snapper Rocks depending on conditions. Newcomers are welcome; bring a bright cap and buddy up.
Coolangatta Beach offers a range of parking options, though you may need to walk a short distance during busy periods. There’s both free and paid parking available along Marine Parade (right on the beachfront) and Griffith Street, which runs parallel just one block back. Additional parking can be found at the Chalk and Lanham Street Car Park on Chalk Street, also one block from Griffith Street, providing convenient access to the beach and nearby cafés. Limited on-street parking is available along the side streets off Marine Parade; these tend to fill early on weekends, so plan to arrive early.
If you’re using public transport, several Translink bus routes stop near Coolangatta Beach, including 768, T601, 760 and 700, which connect the beach with nearby hubs such as Tweed Heads, Burleigh Heads and the Gold Coast Airport.
For cyclists, there are also bike racks located along the foreshore, making it easy to ride in and enjoy a coffee after your swim.
Once you’ve brushed off the sand, you’ll find no shortage of places to eat, relax, or explore around Coolangatta Beach.
For a meal with a view, head to the Coolangatta Surf Club, where the Seabreeze Restaurant offers casual beachfront dining and panoramic ocean views. Seafood lovers will want to try George’s Paragon Coolangatta, renowned for its fresh, generous servings and elegant coastal vibe.
If it’s coffee you’re craving, Board Short Barista, Espresso Cooly, Vanilla Lily, and Good Garden Café are local favourites, each serving up excellent coffee and hearty breakfasts just steps from the sand.
For a bit of post-swim browsing, the Strand Shopping Centre is just across the road and offers a mix of boutiques, surf stores, and eateries. It’s also home to Timezone Coolangatta, a large family-friendly arcade that’s perfect if you’re visiting with kids or looking for some indoor fun.
Nature lovers can enjoy a scenic oceanfront walk starting from Kirra Beach, passing through Coolangatta, Greenmount Point, and over to Rainbow Bay. Continue on to Snapper Rocks, one of the world’s most famous surf breaks, where you can watch local pros carving waves and soak in sweeping views that stretch all the way up the Gold Coast.
