The North Steyne Ocean Swim is one of the true gems of the Sydney swim calendar, drawing ocean lovers from far and wide to the golden shores of Manly. Held at one of the world’s most iconic beaches, this swim blends a buzzing beachside atmosphere with the calm, reefy beauty of Cabbage Tree Bay.
There’s something for everyone, whether you’re dipping your toe into ocean swimming for the first time or chasing the challenge of a longer-distance adventure. The 1km course is ideal for newcomers and younger swimmers, while the 2.8km swim offers a longer journey through clear, protected waters with the chance to spot rays, fish, weedy seadragons and even the odd cuttlefish.
What sets this swim apart is the sense of occasion. The surf club is a hive of pre-swim excitement and post-swim celebrations, and the North Steyne volunteers put on a morning to remember.
Whether you’re there for the swim, the community vibes, or simply a salty morning followed by a good coffee on the Corso, this event delivers

North Steyne Beach sits in the heart of Manly and offers an inviting combination of surf zone and sheltered swim territory thanks to the proximity of Cabbage Tree Bay. The October timing often means moderate water temps (18–20°C), light swell, and crisp spring air.
The swim generally runs in calm to moderate surf, but swimmers should still feel confident in open water. Conditions can vary slightly between the two distances, with the longer swim often extending into deeper water.
This is a great swim for confident beginners stepping up and seasoned swimmers looking to kick off their season.
Wetsuits are optional and welcome. Water temps sit around 18–20°C in mid-October, so wear what keeps you comfy. Basic swim fitness and open water confidence are recommended. Cut-off times are generous; this swim is about participation, not pressure.
Lifesavers and water safety crews will be on hand throughout.

Manly is buzzing in spring and even busier come summer, as locals, interstate travellers and international tourists flock to the popular seaside suburb. We suggest making a day of it, catching the scenic ferry from Circular Quay to Manly Wharf and enjoying one of the best starts to a swim day.
It’s a short stroll from the wharf to the surf club. If you’re driving, plan ahead and get in early. There’s limited street parking, but several paid parking stations are nearby, including two large public car parks on Central Avenue, plus options on Whistler and Wentworth Streets.
All-day pre-paid parking is also available in the National Car Park. Feeling lucky? You might even score a street spot within a block or two.
After your dip, towel off and take a stroll up to the Corso, Manly’s buzzing beachside strip. Grab a post-swim coffee or brunch at one of the local favourites. Barefoot Coffee Traders is a top pick for strong coffee and sourdough toasties, while Rollers Bakehouse serves up croissants with a cult following (seriously, try the miso caramel).
Feeling fresh? Head south along the scenic coastal path to Shelly Beach; it’s an easy 15-minute walk with postcard views and plenty of photo ops. Along the way, stop at the Fairy Bower rock pools for a quick soak or to spot some marine life in the clear shallows.
If you’re sticking around, Manly’s got you covered for more than just the swim. Browse the weekend markets, hire a bike, or find a shady spot in the Norfolk pine-lined parks and watch the surf roll in. Whether you’re with friends, family, or flying solo, soak up the laid-back seaside vibes and turn your ocean swim into a full-blown day out.
