You’ll start on the sandy foreshore of Shellharbour Boat Harbour, swimming through the harbour entrance before heading out into the open water. From there, the course takes you north around Cowries Headland, hugging the foreshore past Cunji Rock Platform, and along to the main patrolled beach at North Shellharbour. The final stretch brings you back around to finish in front of the Shellharbour Surf Life Saving Club, where the cheers, sunshine, and post-swim vibes are waiting. This 2km ocean swim is made for those with a bit of salt in their veins, open water lovers looking for a scenic challenge with just the right mix of reef views, coastal curves, and satisfying distance. Swimmers start on the sandy foreshore of Shellharbour Boat Harbour, making their way through the harbour entrance before heading north around Cowries Headland. You’ll glide along the shoreline past Cunji Rock Platform, around the bend to the main patrolled beach at North Shellharbour, before turning back toward the finish. But wait, there’s more! Once you reach the surf club, you’ll push on for an extra loop heading further north, giving you a taste of open water elements before making the final turn south to finish strong in front of the Shellharbour Surf Life Saving Club. It’s a little longer, a little tougher, and a whole lot more satisfying, the perfect ocean fix for experienced swimmers who want to soak up every stroke.

What to expect in the water

Main Beach is a local favourite with a mix of reef and sand entry, offering great visibility and usually calm conditions. April brings water temps around 21–23°C, and early mornings are often glassy and mild.

The courses run either along the beach or across the reef, depending on conditions. Lifesavers, IRBs, and board paddlers keep a watchful eye throughout.

Swimmer essentials

Wetsuits are allowed. Conditions are usually calm, but some reef and swell exposure means swimmers should be confident in open water. The 2km course is best for intermediate+ ocean swimmers, while the shorter events are beginner-friendly.
