About Balmoral Beach

Balmoral Beach located in the affluent harbourside suburb of Mosman on Sydney’s North Shore is a stunning harbour beach, where you can escape the tumultuous city life in the calm turquoise waters.

Balmoral Beach was originally named after Queen Victoria’s Scottish Castle and was dedicated as a public reserve in 1878 before being proclaimed as Balmoral Park eight years later in 1886.

The area is well known for the ‘Balmoral Slopes’ – the expensive residential real estate that lines the habrour giving owner’s stunning views and incredible beach proximity.

Balmoral is a favourite ocean swimming location among swimmers because of its calm waters. It is home to the Balmoral Swim for Cancer which has been raising money for many cancer related charities since 1990.

To the east of Balmoral Beach is the HMAS Penguin naval depot which is one of the Royal Australian Navy’s primary training establishments and is responsible for providing trained specialists in all areas of the Australian Navy.

How To Get There

Balmoral Beach is easily accessible by public transport. You can catch a ferry at Circular Quay and enjoy the habour sights to Taronga Zoo before getting a connecting bus 238 to Balmoral. With the total trip taking roughly 30 minutes. You can also catch a ferry from the city to Mosman South Wharf before catching the 233 bus to Balmoral.

If you are catching a bus you can catch bus 257 from Chatswood or 238 from Taronga Zoo. Bus 248 will take you directly from the city and drop you right at Balmoral Beach.

Parking at Balmoral is limited and expensive. In the car park on the Esplanade at the Southern end of the beach is $6 for the first two hours and then $6 per hour after that. Street parking is also available but at $8 per hour. Free street-side parking is also available but is a considerable walking distance.

While You're There

Balmoral Beach is full of life with plenty of bustling watersports, thanks to the calm waters of the harbour. Snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and learning to sail at Balmoral Sailing School are all a must when visiting and a great way to explore the shelter bay.

If you are one for walking and exploring there are plenty of option’s along the foreshore trails including the Balmoral Beach to Middle Head track which gives you stunning views of ‘The Heads’ – the harbour’s entrance and introduces you to the colonial fortifications along the way. If you are up for a longer walk, you can also walk along the foreshore to Taronga Zoo to enjoy the animals.

The Bathers Pavilion is located adjacent to the beach. This heritage listed building built in the late 1920s, has recently undergone a multi-million-dollar renovation and now is a hotspot for dining while admiring the stunning harbour views. There is a dining option for everyone from fine-dining to a casual bistro and rooftop champagne bar.

The Balmoral Beach is located right on the water and is a favourite among locals for its great coffee, casual dining options such as fish and chips.
