The Tilbury Classic is one of the South Coast’s most scenic point-to-point swims, and still a bit of a local secret. Hugging the coastline from Tilbury Cove to the Nowra-Culburra SLSC, this 1.9km journey swim takes you across a stretch of water that feels untouched, gliding over reef, skimming past rocky headlands, and swimming through vibrant marine life along the way.
It’s the kind of swim that feels personal and grounded. With smaller numbers, a welcoming, low-key vibe, and a raw, natural setting, it’s perfect for ocean swimmers who want something a little different, something with heart.
You’ll finish with salt in your hair and a smile on your face, feeling more connected to the sea, the land, and the tight-knit community that brings this special event to life each year. It’s a swim that stays with you, long after you’ve left the beach.
Culburra Beach is a long, curved stretch of sand with generally mild conditions. The swim starts at the sheltered Tilbury Cove and follows the shoreline north to the surf club. April conditions bring water temps around 21–23°C with light swell and gentle currents.
The reef and rocky points create a dynamic course with stunning visibility on clear days.
Wetsuits allowed. Swimmers must be confident in open water and capable of swimming ~2km with some wave entry and exit. A Surf Rescue Certificate is required for 13–15 year-olds.
IRBs and surf lifesavers patrol the course from start to finish.
8-9:15 am – Registration opens @ Nowra-Culburra SLSC
9:30 am – Mandatory pre-swim briefing
10:00 am – 1.9km swim start @ Culburra Beach, north side of headland
Culburra Beach is an easy getaway, just 2.5 hours from Sydney and about 30 minutes from Nowra, making it a perfect day trip or weekend stay on the South Coast.
When it comes to parking, you’re in luck. One of the perks of small towns and small swims is that parking is rarely an issue, and the Tilbury Classic is no different. You’ve got options:
Park at the finish line (at the Nowra-Culburra Surf Club) and catch the provided transport to the start at Tilbury Cove.
Park at the start, and after your swim, it’s just a 200m walk back to your car along the sand or footpath.
Or split the difference and park somewhere in the middle. Oh, the freedom!
If you’re travelling without a car, public transport is limited, but doable with planning. Trains run to Bomaderry (Nowra) from Sydney, and you can grab a taxi or rideshare from there to Culburra. Be sure to check schedules in advance, especially on weekends and public holidays.
Whichever way you arrive, the vibe is easy, the views are epic, and the logistics are low-stress, just the way an ocean swim morning should be.
After you’ve glided around the headland and crossed the finish line at Warrain Beach, Culburra is the kind of place that makes you want to kick off your swimmers, grab a bite, and stay a little longer.
Start with a post-swim brunch at The Little Snapper, think good coffee, coastal vibes, and a menu that hits the spot after 1.9 salty kilometres. Or keep it classic with fish and chips from Pelican Rocks, best enjoyed with toes in the sand and a view of the ocean you just swam across.
For a bit of exploring, head up to Crookhaven Heads Lookout, an easy walk with panoramic views of the coastline, the river mouth, and maybe even the route you swam. It’s a local favourite for good reason.
If you’ve got time on your side, turn the swim into a South Coast mini-break. You’re just a short drive from Jervis Bay, with its world-famous white sand beaches, walking tracks, and dolphin-spotting potential. Throw in a few laid-back cafes, a craft brewery or two, and you’ve got the perfect post-swim weekend escape.
The Tilbury Classic isn’t just about the swim; it’s about the whole experience. Salt, scenery, and small-town charm? Yes please.
