The Yamba Ocean Swim is a fun open water event in the northern New South Wales town of Yamba. With a number of swims on offer, the event is the perfect holiday outing for the whole family to enjoy.
The stunningly beautiful coastal town is located about 2hrs drive from the Gold Coast, and just over 3 hours from Brisbane (just be mindful of daylight saving when planning your trip).
This ocean swim has three distances for competitors to choose from, a 700m for swimmers 10 years and over and a 2km for those swimmers 12 years and over. To finish it off there’s a 150m Dash for Cash for swimmers who compete in either the 700m or 2km ocean swim earlier in the day.
One of the many benefits of this swim is that if conditions aren’t suitable at the open beach, the event can be relocated to Whiting Beach inside the river mouth.
Yamba is an open surf beach that offers variable breaks, sandbanks, gutters, rips, currents and constantly changing conditions with the changing tides. However, the southern headland does offer some protection from swells and southerly winds.
The ocean swim is suitable for swimmers of all ocean swimming abilities, from the novice to the more competitive open water athlete.
The 700m swim starts at Convent Beach and finishes at Yamba Main Beach, slightly north, and is a fun little adventure.
The 2km ocean swim is a classic large rectangular course, with buoys marking the way away from, along, and back to, the main beach in front of the surf club, taking in the sights north and south of the bay.
The Dash for Cash is open to participants from the 700m and 2km ocean swim who can put themselves on the line to win the $$$. The race will take place once the 700m and 2km event have been completed and the crowd will be cheering on loudly.
The Yamba area is a beautiful place and is the perfect place take a few days off and the spend the weekend with the family.
The Angourie walking track is a beautiful coastal trail with the most magnificent ocean views of sheltered bays and rocky shoals.
If you need to cool off after your hike there is an array of gorgeous beaches where you can take a dip, go surfing and just soak up the sun. Our top picks are Angourie Beach, Pippi Beach and Turner’s Beach.
While you’re there be sure to visit the Yamba Lighthouse, it has impressive views out to the ocean and of the surrounding beaches. It also makes a great spot for a picnic with the family where the parents can take in the views and the kids can run around the grassland.
Looking to wet your whistle? Venture up the hill from the surf club to the pub with one of the most spectacular views on the coast, they’re also a sponsor of the swim so let them know you’re supporting them!
Small town swims = lots of on-street, free parking – but it is the holidays…
Start with a look in the carpark next to the Queen Street tennis court, then look along Clarence Street, Queen Street, Beach Street and Pilot Street. If you look here, you’ll find something, and you won’t have to walk far.
