Why this event?

Five beaches, four headlands, one epic swim

The North Bondi To Coogee 5km swim is a point-to-point adventure across Sydney’s most iconic stretch of coast. With five golden beaches, four rugged headlands, two sheltered bays and the legendary Wedding Cake Island on the horizon, it’s the ultimate Sydney swim experience.

This is a swim that captures the drama and beauty of the eastern suburbs coastline. You’ll pass bustling beach crowds, glide across deep-blue headlands, and ride the southern drift towards Coogee with the salt spray on your skin. Every kilometre brings a new challenge, from cross-currents at Bronte to the steady pull past Wedding Cake Island.

The camaraderie of this event makes it truly special. Swimmers and their support crews work together to take on the ocean in a safe, supported, and uplifting atmosphere. The small field (just 100 entries) ensures everyone is known, looked after, and part of something unique.

If you’ve ever dreamed of stringing Sydney’s most famous beaches together in one swim, this is your chance.

What's on offer

5km Ocean Swim
  • years
The North Bondi to Coogee 5km swim is a point-to-point adventure linking two of Sydney’s most iconic beaches. Starting on the golden sands of North Bondi, swimmers head south past Ben Buckler Headland, where the first challenge awaits in the form of a northbound rip. From there, the course takes you along one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in Australia. You’ll glide past Tamarama and Bronte, negotiating the cross-current sweep off Bronte Headland before skirting the calmer waters of Clovelly Bay. The scenery shifts constantly, from open-ocean blue to sheltered turquoise bays and dramatic sandstone cliffs. The final leg pushes you past Gordon’s Bay and around the back of Wedding Cake Island, where a southerly drift often gives swimmers a helpful push towards Coogee. The finish line awaits at South Coogee Beach, where family and friends can cheer you ashore. This is a swim that combines beauty and challenge: five beaches, four headlands, two bays, one island, and three distinct currents to navigate. With full water safety support, it’s a chance to experience Sydney’s coastline in a way few ever do, all in one unforgettable swim.

What to expect in the water

The course links some of Sydney’s most loved beaches, North Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Coogee. Expect ocean temperatures around 19–21°C in early November, with conditions ranging from calm bays to rolling headland chop.

Swimmers will face natural challenges, including the northbound rip off Ben Buckler, a cross-current sweep off Bronte, and the south drift past Wedding Cake Island. But with experienced water safety teams, lifeguards, and IRB and jet ski support, you’ll be well looked after.

This swim is suited to confident and experienced ocean swimmers ready for a longer challenge in variable conditions.

Support crew must:

  • Carry a phone and join the WhatsApp event group
  • Carry a 5L dry bag with swimmer’s clothes
  • Check in at course checkpoints (1, 4, and 6)
  • Safety support includes IRBs, Waverley & Randwick lifeguards on jet skis, and drone coverage for shark/marine life surveillance and incident response.
  • Wetsuits permitted, optional.

Getting there & around

North Bondi is easily reached by bus from Bondi Junction, making it simple for swimmers and supporters to arrive without the hassle of parking. The streets around Bondi can get busy early, so public transport or rideshare is strongly encouraged. For those driving, limited street parking is available, but be prepared for an early start to secure a spot.

At the finish, Coogee offers both street parking and a few car parks, though these fill quickly on sunny weekends. Public transport is the easier option, with regular buses connecting Coogee back to Bondi Junction and the city. Carpooling with fellow swimmers and supporters is also a smart way to reduce parking stress.

For family and friends who want to follow the action, there are multiple headland vantage points along the route. Ben Buckler Headland at North Bondi, Mackenzies Point, Bronte, Clovelly, and the clifftop above Gordon’s Bay all offer brilliant viewing spots to watch swimmers make their way south. The finish at South Coogee provides a more intimate atmosphere than the main Coogee beach, making it a great place for supporters to cheer swimmers home.

While you're there

Bondi to Coogee is not just an epic swim course; it’s also one of Sydney’s most famous coastal experiences. After you’ve conquered the ocean, swap your goggles for sneakers and take on the 6km coastal walk that links the two beaches. The trail meanders along sandstone cliffs, past ocean pools, hidden coves, and lookout points that showcase the best of Sydney’s coastline. Keep an eye out for dolphins or migrating whales if the season is right.

Coogee is a natural place to linger after the swim. Refuel at one of the many beachside cafés, whether it’s a big recovery brunch, a green juice, or just a well-earned coffee, you’ll find plenty of options. For a more festive vibe, the Coogee Pavilion is a local favourite with rooftop views, relaxed dining, and space for friends and family to gather and celebrate your finish.

Bondi itself is worth exploring before or after the event. Take a dip at the famous Bondi Icebergs pool, browse boutique shops, or grab a smoothie from one of the trendy health bars. For a more relaxed pace, Bronte Baths and Clovelly’s calm bay are perfect spots to float, swim, or simply soak up the sun.

With the buzz of Bondi at the start, the laid-back charm of Coogee at the finish, and everything in between, this event makes for the perfect Sydney weekend. Whether you’re swimming, supporting, or just soaking up the atmosphere, you’ll be part of one of the world’s most iconic oceanfront playgrounds.
