ResetLaps for Life isn’t just about the distance, it’s about the experience, the consistency, and the impact every stroke has on youth mental health. Ian Thorpe share’s his advice for staying motivated all month long.
For many swimmers, March is a special month. It’s the time of year when the swimming community comes together for Laps for Life, a nationwide fundraising event supporting youth mental health.
Whether you’re swimming to challenge yourself, stay fit, or make a difference, Laps for Life is an opportunity to dive in and contribute to a cause that saves lives.
But as any swimmer knows, maintaining momentum can be one of the most challenging parts of the journey.
Ian Thorpe, Australia’s most decorated Olympian, understands the challenge all too well. When asked what he finds the hardest part about getting laps done he gives great advice to participants signed up for Laps For Life.
“For a lot of swimmers I’ve met, it’s running out of steam,” says Mr Thorpe.
“It’s easy to stay motivated at the start. The first few swims are fresh and exciting, your energy levels are high, and every session feels like progress.
“But then, life gets busy. A missed session turns into two, and before you know it, your strong start feels like a distant memory.
“The muscles ache, the motivation wanes, and suddenly, the idea of hitting your target seems a little more daunting.”

Mr Thorpe’s advice for not letting motivation wean is simple – pace yourself!
“That way, you can get the great physical and mental well-being benefits that come with swimming, without burning out,” said Mr Thrope.
“The trick is to approach your goal with consistency rather than intensity.
“The fable of the tortoise and the hare might be old, but it still holds true. The swimmers who succeed aren’t the ones who go out too hard and fade, they’re the ones who chip away at their goal, session by session.
“Remember, you’ve got an entire month to hit your lap target, so there’s plenty of time to ease into it, and you don’t have to hit your goal in your very first week.
“Laps for Life isn’t just about the distance, it’s about the experience.
“Every lap is a step towards better physical health, mental clarity, and supporting a cause that matters.
“So instead of pushing too hard too soon, give yourself the space to settle into a rhythm and enjoy the process.
“After all, the best swims aren’t the ones where you burn out. They’re the ones that keep you coming back, lap after lap, year after year.”
