Why this event?

Guaranteed a great morning of ocean swimming in protected waters

Looking for a relaxed ocean swim with postcard-perfect water, a friendly festival vibe, and a setting that feels like a holiday? The Coffs Coast Ocean Swims tick all the boxes, and then some.

Held in the calm, protected waters of Jetty Beach, this event is a firm favourite with families, first-timers, seasoned locals, and salty travellers alike. It’s the kind of day where you’ll see kids doing their first swim, regulars catching up in the shallows, and visiting ocean lovers soaking up the atmosphere and the sun.

There’s a swim for everyone, whether you’re dipping your toe in with a shorter distance or chasing that longer cruise around the buoys. The vibe is low-pressure and high-stoke, and you’re guaranteed to walk away with that warm post-swim glow (and probably a sand-covered smile).

Whether it’s your first ocean swim or your fiftieth, this is one you’ll want to come back to year after year.

What's on offer

300m Harbour Swim
  • John Mills ‘North Coast Swim Academy’ Swim
  • 8 - 13 years
Designed for swimmers aged 8–13, this short course is all about building confidence and having fun in the ocean. Held on the northern side of the jetty, the course follows an out, across, and back route that stays close to shore, perfect for young swimmers keen to dip their toes into open water for the first time. It’s a great way to develop ocean awareness, get a feel for the salt and swell, and experience the buzz of a real ocean swim event in a safe, supported setting. Smiles, high-fives, and proud parents are guaranteed.
600m Harbour Swim
  • 10 years
Looking to level up from a short splash? The 600m swim is the perfect step-up challenge for older kids and adults wanting a taste of open water without going too far out. Starting on the southern side of the jetty, swimmers will cruise around the jetty and finish on the beach on the northern side, taking in calm waters, scenic views, and plenty of encouragement from the crowd. There’ll be separate wave starts for male and female swimmers, keeping things smooth and supportive. Whether you’re a child taking the next step, an adult new to ocean swimming, or someone building swim fitness with a smile, this swim strikes just the right balance between fun and challenge.
2km Harbour Swim
  • 14 years
Settle in and soak it up, this cruisy 2km harbour swim is all about rhythm, views, and salty satisfaction. You’ll start on the northern side of the jetty, head out past the end of the structure, then swing into a clockwise loop around a series of buoys on the southern side. From there, it’s a smooth arc back around the outside of the jetty, before heading for the beach and a friendly finish on the northern side, where the cheers (and dry towels) await. Protected waters, a scenic route, and just enough distance to stretch the arms and the smile, this one’s a classic for good reason.

What to expect in the water

Jetty Beach is one of the safest and most accessible ocean swim locations in NSW. Located inside the marina breakwall, the beach is protected from swell and current, making it ideal for less experienced swimmers and juniors.

Expect 24–26°C water, light chop, and sunshine in late March. The beach has great spectator views and a grassy foreshore perfect for a post-swim chill.

Swimmer essentials

Wetsuits are optional but rarely needed. This is one of the calmest swims in NSW. Lifesavers are stationed throughout the course. Swimmers should be comfortable in the water but don’t need to be elite.

It’s all about participation, confidence, and community.

Getting there & around

Jetty Beach is as convenient as it is beautiful, well-serviced with plenty of parking, toilets, shade, and all the essentials for a smooth swim day. There’s loads of grassy space for picnics, shady trees to stretch out under post-swim, and easy access to everything you’ll need before and after your splash.

The beach is just a short stroll from the Jetty Strip cafés, Sunday markets and Marina shops where you’ll find great coffee, cold drinks, and brunch options for all tastes. Whether you’re staying nearby or rolling in for the day, you’re only a 5-minute drive from the Coffs Harbour town centre, with heaps of accommodation, shops, and services close by.

Public transport makes it easy too; local buses run regularly from around Coffs Harbour, including routes from the town centre, Park Beach, and surrounding suburbs. The Coffs Harbour train station is also nearby, just a few minutes’ walk or a short ride from the beach, making it accessible for swimmers arriving from up or down the coast.

So whether you’re driving, walking, busing or training it in, Jetty Beach makes arrival and departure a breeze, just don’t forget to leave time for a coffee and a yarn before the starting horn!
