The BSc Bergs to Buckler Ocean Swim event is a reincarnation of the ‘Roughwater’ and its latest format is an exciting mix of the old with something fresh and new.

Still in its usual format is the 1km ocean swim that takes swimmers out alongside Ben Buckler Headland to the edge of the bay and back.

This year’s exciting new addition is a change-up of the 2km ocean swim. Previously, this swim took a circuit out and around the bay, however, true to the event’s new name, the 2km ocean swim course will now start at the south end of Bondi Beach in the shadows of Bondi Icebergs – “Bergs” – and make its way north to Ben Buckler headland – “Buckler”. However, it’s not a straight swim north! The course is designed in an ‘M-shape’ and consists of two 1km swims, taking swimmers out and back through the surf twice, with a beach transition in between.

Bondi is a mecca for ocean swimming in Sydney, with swimming groups dominating the water most mornings of the week, and why wouldn’t it be, it is a simply stunning place to swim.

From the iconic Icebergs in the south to the famous Bondi Lifeguards and their tower in the middle, to the North Bondi rock pools and Grassy Knoll in the north, it’s the place to be.

This event can attract hundreds of competitors, so make sure you get in early.

Note: This is the sister event to the Oceana North Bondi Classic (held in February).

Bondi Beach is an open beach with banks, gutters, rips, and as a south-facing beach, will have swell when it’s from the S/SE. However, North Bondi beach is the calmer and gentler end of Bondi, being protected by Ben Buckler and the northern headland and rock shelf.

      1km Ocean Swim

The 1km ocean swim course starts on the beach out the front of North Bondi SLSC and heads straight out off the beach alongside the rocky headland, before the turning buoys sea-side of Ben Buckler headland assist with a small right hand u-turn, before returning to the beach.

      BSc Bergs to Buckler

The 2km ocean swim course is an M-shaped course that starts at South Bondi and finishes at North Bondi, with a beach transition in the middle. Essentially, this means the course consists of two 1km swims, taking swimmers out and back through the surf twice.

Swim aids such as wetsuits, fins, snorkels and pull buoys are allowed during the race, but swimmers who choose to use aids will need to state so in the online entry portal.

After the swim, explore Sydney’s famous beachside suburb, Bondi. There are plenty of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants to explore and fit everyone’s taste.

Take your pick of local favourites Messina, the North Bondi RSL, The Depot and Ravesis.

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the famous ‘Boys in Blue’, the lifeguards from Bondi Rescue. They are either on the beach or roaming the streets of Bondi and are always up for a photo if you ask.

Bondi Beach has multiple parking options; the Bondi Beach carpark offers parking for $8 per hour, but if you travel a few streets back from the main Bondi strip, you will find 2-hour paid parking zones followed by a hot commodity of free all-day parking. Be warned, though, these parks do get snapped up quickly.

If you don’t want to drive, you can also catch public transport, with the 380 and 333 heading from the city, through Bondi Junction, to Bondi Beach.
