Why do swimmers return to Ocean Swim Fiji year after year? Past participants share how its mix of tropical swims, island relaxation, and friendly camaraderie makes it the ultimate swimcation.
What do you get when you combine warm tropical waters, three stunning ocean swims, and five days of effortless island life? For many swimmers, it’s the kind of experience they’ll happily book again and again.
Ocean Swim Fiji isn’t your typical swim event. Created by New Zealand event directors Scott and Natasha Rice, it blends ocean swimming, travel, and connection in a way that feels more like an unforgettable holiday than an event. Since launching in 2018, it’s grown into a world-class “swimcation,” drawing swimmers (and their supporters) from across the globe.
There’s something truly special about this event. But what exactly keeps people coming back? We asked a few familiar faces from past years to share their stories.
“I came back because I had such an enjoyable time the first time. I wanted an active overseas trip that was easy to join, not a cruise or a tour bus. This ticked every box.
The swims were a huge highlight, especially getting back into the ocean after years away. There was zero pressure to race or compare times—just pure enjoyment. Everything was brilliantly organised, from the swimming to the travel, and it always felt relaxed and seamless.
Even if you don’t swim, it’s still a fantastic week away. It’s friendly, it’s welcoming, and there’s always a quiet spot if you want downtime. Honestly, it was just a great experience.”
“It was the ultimate reset: five days, three swims, and zero worries. The whole event was so well run, and it’s the perfect winter escape from Australia—only a five-hour flight and suddenly you’re in Fiji!
I’ll never forget that first swim at South Sea Island. The conditions were a little more challenging than usual, but I felt completely safe thanks to the amazing support team—and having Ky Hurst in the water! I hadn’t done an ocean swim in over ten years, so finishing that first swim was a real confidence boost.
From massages and post-swim drinks to bumping elbows with Paralympic Gold Medallist Cameron Leslie mid-swim (and laughing about it later), every moment was memorable. The people you meet are incredible too—I’m actually swimming in Malaysia next year with a friend I met in Fiji!”
“We’ve done plenty of swim events, but Fiji is number one. It’s that perfect mix of fun, sun, and fitness. The event feels so friendly—you’re instantly part of a big family.
We love everything: the Pina Coladas, the Fijian culture, the camaraderie. Watching swimmers grow in confidence and smash their goals is really special. It’s such a supportive vibe.
The swims cater for all abilities, and safety is always front of mind. It’s like going on holiday with 200 mates in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Once you’ve been, you’ll want to come back.”
