The Portsea Swim Classic is one of Victoria’s most iconic ocean swims, set on the sparkling, clear waters of Port Phillip Bay, backed by the rolling dunes and rugged cliffs of Point Nepean National Park. With its postcard-perfect backdrop and buzzing beachside vibe, it’s no wonder this swim has earned a legendary status on the summer calendar.

Whether you’re teaming up for the 500m Classic Team (where two swimmers take on the course together), watching the next generation shine in the Classic Junior (500m), or diving into the 1.5km Classic, there’s something for everyone. And for those chasing a little extra challenge and maybe a little extra glory, the 2.5km Gold swim and the Portsea Da$h 4 Ca$h bring the heat. Every stroke comes with a view: golden sand, turquoise water, and the occasional dolphin if you’re lucky. The course is well marked, safety is top-notch, and the finish-line energy is unmatched.

As part of the prestigious World Series Swims, the event draws a diverse crowd, from first-timers dipping their toe into the open water world to some of Australia’s best ocean swimmers chasing PBs. But don’t let that intimidate you; the vibe is all about participation, community, and celebrating summer by the sea. The crowd’s supportive, the volunteers are legends, and the post-swim buzz lasts well into the afternoon.

Make a day of it with food stalls, music, and plenty of space to sprawl out on the sand. Or better yet, make a weekend of it, Portsea is the crown jewel of the Mornington Peninsula, and the swim is just the start of what’s on offer.

1.5km Ocean Swim

Portsea Classic

12 years

The signature event of the day, the 1.5km Portsea Swim Classic is a spectacular point-to-point course that captures the magic of the Mornington Peninsula coastline. The swim begins near the iconic Portsea Pier, where you’ll launch into the crystal-clear waters of Weeroona Bay. From there, you’ll track west around Police Point, hugging the shoreline of Point Nepean National Park, a stretch of coast known for its natural beauty and historical significance. With calm, protected conditions and panoramic views, this swim is as scenic as it is satisfying. The course finishes at Jarman Oval (affectionately known as the “Polo Ground”), located within the historic Quarantine Station, a unique and memorable finish line surrounded by dunes, bushland, and national park.

2.5km Ocean Swim

Portsea Gold

12 years

The 2.5km Portsea Gold is the ultimate long course challenge, starting to the east of the Portsea Hotel with a thrilling shotgun start. Limited to just 300 swimmers, this exclusive event offers a longer, more demanding swim along the stunning Portsea coastline, perfect for those looking to push the pace and soak up the scenery.

500m Ocean Swim

New to the program this year, the Portsea Swim Classic TEAM event brings a social twist to ocean swimming; it’s all about fun, connection, and shared experience in the stunning waters of ‘Quarantine’. Swum over a relaxed 500m course, teams of two or more swimmers (of any age or gender) take to the water together. Participants must be 8 years or older, with younger swimmers (aged 8–11) required to swim alongside at least one adult. It’s the perfect event for families, friends, and first-timers to share the magic of the Portsea Swim Classic while soaking up the atmosphere of this iconic day. Times are recorded so you can compare and celebrate your team’s effort at the finish line. Whether it’s your first swim or your fiftieth, this one’s about participation, not pace and the memories you’ll make together in one of Victoria’s most spectacular swim settings.

500m Ocean Swim

Portsea Junior

8 - 13 years

The Junior Swim Classic is the perfect way for young swimmers (aged up to 13) to dive into the action and be part of the iconic Portsea Swim Classic Day. This 500m swim runs with the tide through the pristine, sheltered waters of the Quarantine Station, finishing at the same famous line as the main event. It’s a safe, fun, and confidence-building experience that lets junior swimmers feel the buzz of a big event while enjoying a supportive atmosphere in calm conditions.

Ocean Swim

DA$h 4 Ca$h

18 years

Fast, fierce, and a whole lot of fun, the Portsea Da$h 4 Ca$h brings serious speed to Swim Classic Day. Open to male and female swimmers aged 18 and over who are already registered in another event, this short-course sprint sees competitors charge off the line together in a high-energy, winner-takes-all showdown. With $3,000 cash prizes for both the men’s and women’s champions, it’s a crowd favourite and a thrilling watch from the beach. Make sure to check the event schedule, the Da$h 4 Ca$h is one race you don’t want to miss, whether you’re chasing the win or cheering from the sand.
