The South Maroubra Ocean Swim is the ultimate season-closer, your last salty hurrah before hanging up the togs (or doubling down on winter swims). Set at one of Sydney’s classic southern beaches, this swim wraps up the summer calendar with a bang.
Part of the Triple Crown Series, it’s a crowd favourite for good reason: friendly finish-line vibes, crisp autumn water, and a beach buzzing with post-swim banter and celebrations. The South Maroubra SLSC knows how to put on a day, expect warm welcomes, solid water safety, and a community atmosphere that hits all the right notes.
Choose your challenge: the short and sharp 500m, a cruisy 1km, or the longer 2.5km loop around the bay. The course is open, spacious, and scenic, with enough swell to make it fun but manageable.
And when you’re done? There’s live music, prize giveaways, hot food, and that unbeatable feeling of stretching out on the sand, soaking up the sun with your swim crew. Whether you’re wrapping up your first ocean swim season or your fiftieth, this is the perfect way to go out on a high.

South Maroubra is a big, wide-open beach with clear water, punchy waves, and plenty of space. The beach faces southeast, offering clean conditions most autumn mornings. In April, the water stays warm at 21–23°C.
The swim courses run in a rectangle out from the beach, looping around buoys with plenty of room to move.
Wetsuits are welcome. The swimsuits all levels, with short and long options supported by surf lifesavers and IRBs. Expect a little swell and wave navigation, just enough to make it fun.

There’s free parking along Marine Parade and nearby side streets, but it fills up fast, especially if the sun’s shining. Arrive early to nab a spot, or better yet, carpool with your swim crew. The beach is easy to find, with clear signage and the South Maroubra SLSC located right at the southern end of the beach.
Public transport is a solid option. Buses regularly run from Central Station, Bondi Junction, and surrounding suburbs, with stops just a short walk from the beach. Routes like the 395, 396, 397 and 399 all get you close, with the 396 dropping you right near the surf club.
If you’re coming from out of town, take the train to Central, then jump on a bus heading to Maroubra Beach, it’s an easy, breezy ride to the sand. With traffic and parking always a bit of a lucky dip, public transport can often be the stress-free winner.
Stick around after your swim for South Maroubra’s famous surf club BBQ, sausages sizzling, live music playing, and plenty of post-swim banter in the sun. It’s the kind of community vibe that makes this event more than just a swim.
For a top-tier coffee and pastry combo, pop into The Grumpy Baker (locals swear by the cinnamon scrolls). Want something heartier? Head up to Pool Café or Chalk Espresso for brunch, think avo toast, big brekkies, and excellent coffee.
Feeling active? Walk it off along the Malabar Headland National Park track, a stunning coastal path with sweeping views from South Maroubra to Malabar. Or keep it mellow and spread out on the grassy reserve with a post-swim picnic.
If you’re bringing the kids, there’s a playground nearby, and the gentle rock pools at the southern end of the beach are perfect for sandy little adventures.
From swim to feed to stroll, South Maroubra dishes up the full ocean swimming experience, salty, sunny, and seriously fun.
