Stretch out the season with the annual South Maroubra Ocean Swim.
South Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Club hosts one of the final Sydney swims of the season, the annual South Maroubra Ocean Swim with all entry fees contributing to the purchase of vital lifesaving equipment required by their volunteer lifesavers.
This event makes the most of the location with three events and an all-day community beach party.
The first event at 8.30 am is the 500m swim for ages 9 to 12, followed up by the 1km swim (9.15 am) and then the
2.5km swim (10 am), both open to all aged 13 years and above.
There are distances on offer for all abilities and they are all a simple circuit around the buoys in front of South Maroubra Surf Club.
Maroubra Beach is an open beach with sifting banks, gutters and the occasional rip as with any beach, all making for an exciting swim for all abilities.
At 10am the 2.5km course heads along the Malabar Headland before the marker to turn north. The next turn is in line with Maroubra SLSC, where swimmers traverse back towards South Maroubra before a final marker and heading to shore.
The 1km swim at 9.15 am is for ages 13 years and up. A rectangular course heading out from the south end of the beach, then a short swim north before turning back towards the surf club.
The swim combo is the big one – treating the 1km at 9.15 am as the warm-up to the 2.5km at 10 am.
Just for 9- to 12-year-olds, a perfect 500m course for both those looking for line honours or those taking on their very first ocean swim.
Once you finish your swim, take in the spectacular sights of mother nature and the ocean from Maroubra headland and Mahon ocean pool.
There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from in Maroubra including local favourite The Bay Hotel, known for its pub food and ice-cold beer. The Grumpy Baker is also a must when visiting, their croissants, chocolate brownies, unique sourdough bread and fruit scrolls are like no other.
There is free beach parking available all along Maroubra Beach.
If you choose to take public transport, buses run from the city, Bondi Junction and Central.
Alternative Venue
If the surf conditions on the day of the event are determined to be dangerous at Maroubra Beach the alternative venue for the three swims will be at Malabar Beach on the same day with a half-hour delay on advertised start times. All registered participants will be notified the day before the event of alternative venue details.
