Madison Perry, 15, may have only been in the ocean swimming world for a couple of years but she is ready to take on the Blackmores Billy Ocean Swim this Sunday, 16 January.
“I first got into ocean swimming through nippers when I was nine years old, doing all the ocean swims at nipper carnivals,” said Miss Perry.
“I then did my first proper organised ocean swim three years ago and that was actually the Bilgola Ocean Swim where I competed in the 800m.”
Since Miss Perry’s first taste of ocean swimming, she has become hooked on ocean swims and regularly competes in ocean swims during the season, just recently finishing ninth at the Newport Pool to Peak Ocean Swim.
“I love ocean swimming because it makes me feel relaxed and strong in the water,” said Miss Perry.
“My favourite part of ocean swimming would definitely be the intensity it brings while swimming because no two days ever have the same surf conditions,”
“So, the competition is always different and that makes ocean swimming exciting.”
Miss Perry has so far competed in two of the five ocean swims apart of the Pittwater Ocean Swim Series and has her eyes on doing all five to give herself a chance at winning OceanFit’s Swim the Whitsunday holiday up for grabs.
“My aim is to try and do all the swims in the Pittwater Series,” said Miss Perry.
“It would be really exciting for me if I did end up winning the Whitsunday swim holiday, that would be awesome.”
When asked why Miss Perry liked the Blackmores Billy Ocean Swim her reply was simple: “the community that surrounds it all”.
“I love the community around the Bilgola Swim and from my experience over the past couple of Bilgola Ocean Swims everyone is very supportive and enthusiastic about the swim,” said Miss Perry.
“Most people are also very supportive of new ocean swimmers and the young swimmers like myself who swim in it, which is great.”
To join Miss Perry and the Bilgola community in the Blackmores Billy Swim on Sunday, 16 January 2022, head to the Blackmores Ocean Swim listing to enter. Entries close at 3 pm, Saturday 15 January.
