Swimming NSW’s 2.5km Classic Series makes Penrith Lakes the perfect open water swim for beginners and veterans alike.
Swimming NSW is making waves in the open water world with the launch of a brand-new 2.5km Classic Series.
For the first time, swimmers will have the chance to take on a measured 2.5km course at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, complete with in-water starts, official times, and the opportunity to chase personal bests across three events: the Nepean Aquatic Open Water Classic, the Metro South West Open Water Classic, and the Swimming NSW Open Water Classic.
James Hickman, Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer at Swimming NSW, says the series was designed as a stepping stone for swimmers looking to explore the open water.
“We wanted to create something that’s safe, accessible, and enjoyable while still being a real challenge,” said Mr Hickman.
“By offering a controlled environment and a consistent 2.5km distance, we’re aiming to build confidence for swimmers who might be new to open water, while giving seasoned swimmers the chance to test themselves against the clock. It ties directly into our broader vision of growing participation and creating pathways that encourage lifelong involvement in the sport.”
The 2.5km Classic is open to all comers, from pool swimmers dipping their toes into open water, to masters chasing fitness goals, through to seasoned ocean swimmers looking for a flat-water hit-out.
The measured distance provides a consistent benchmark, letting swimmers track their progress across the series or enjoy the experience of completing all three.
“It’s about opening the door to more swimmers,” said Mr Hickman.
“Whether it’s your first open water challenge, or you’re an experienced ocean swimmer wanting a race without surf or currents, the Classic has something for you.”
The Sydney International Regatta Centre provides the ideal backdrop for the new series. With calm waters free from waves, currents, or marine life, it delivers a racing environment that’s both safe and predictable.
The venue is already renowned for hosting world-class events, featuring athlete facilities and spectator-friendly paths and grandstands, allowing friends and family to follow the action from start to finish.
What makes the series even more special is its place on the program of the NSW State Open Water Championships. Swimmers in the Classic will arrive to an atmosphere buzzing with elite racing, as the state’s best tackle the 10km, 7.5km and JX 2.5km.
“There’s nothing more inspiring than seeing some of Australia’s top open water athletes in action and then being able to line up for your own race on the same stage,” said Mr Hickman.
“And with the Classic open to everyone, don’t be surprised if you find yourself racing alongside an elite or two.”
Each event has its own entry structure and prizes, with the State 2.5km Classic offering unique finisher medals and podium places crowned as state champions. But beyond the medals, the real goal is to encourage swimmers to walk away with a sense of achievement.
“We want people to finish the 2.5km Classic with a smile, a sense of accomplishment, and the confidence to keep exploring what open water swimming has to offer,” said Mr Hickman.
The Swimming NSW 2.5km Classic Series, spanning the Nepean Aquatic Open Water Classic, Metro South West Open Water Classic, and Swimming NSW Open Water Classic, is set to be more than just another race; it’s an invitation to try something new, to test yourself in a measured setting, and to discover just how rewarding open water swimming can be.
