Sydney swimmers are spoilt for choice this summer, with Marrinawi Cove, Bedlam Bay and Pondi (Penrith Beach) all reopening to offer fresh, safe and scenic new places to cool off across the harbour, river and west.
Sydney is diving into summer with a wave of good news: three long-awaited swimming sites- Barangaroo’s Marrinawi Cove, Bedlam Bay on the Parramatta River, and Pondi (Penrith Beach) in the west- have officially reopened, giving swimmers fresh places to cool off, connect to Country, and explore new corners of the waterways that shape our city.
It’s a rare moment of expansion, especially as harbour and river sites have historically been off-limits or largely forgotten. Now, Sydney’s swimmers suddenly have more choices, from urban sandstone edges to leafy river pockets to a full Western Sydney ‘beach.’
Barangaroo’s Marrinawi Cove, one of Sydney’s newest but most culturally significant swim locations, is back open after a suite of upgrades designed to make the site safer, more accessible, and friendlier for summer crowds.
Once used by First Nations communities for swimming, fishing and canoeing, the cove now blends natural sandstone, native plantings and modern amenities.
The upgrades include a larger swimming enclosure with an extra 150m² of water space, a more spacious swim zone that now allows for approximately 45-metre laps, new non-slip platforming with handrails, sandstone steps and a sturdy ladder for safer access, as well as a double outdoor shower and expanded areas for lounging and picnics.
Weekends through summer will include live music and pop-up coffee and gelato, making the cove feel more like a pocket-sized beach club in the heart of the CBD.
For inner-city swimmers, workers, tourists and pre-sunset dippers, Marrinawi Cove is now one of the easiest, safest and most scenic ways to get salty without leaving town.

Across the waterway, and across time, Bedlam Bay has reopened to public swimming for the first time since the 1950s.
Hidden within Parramatta River Regional Park at Gladesville, the bay was historically a beloved inner-river bathing spot before pollution and shifting priorities pushed it into obscurity. Now, after a significant restoration effort, it’s back.
The upgrades include a netted swimming enclosure for safety, fresh access points and new safety equipment, early-stage amenities with further improvements planned, and ongoing water-quality monitoring to ensure swimmers can return with confidence.
Bedlam Bay offers a completely different swim experience: calm water, eucalyptus-lined banks, bird chatter, and a slower pace that feels worlds away from Bondi or Manly.
It’s not without quirks, think oyster shells, shallow areas, and a natural riverbed, but swimmers embracing a bit of rustic charm will find a peaceful, history-rich spot perfect for relaxed laps or gentle cooling dips.

Western Sydney finally has its own summer hotspot with the reopening of Pondi, Penrith Beach, a project that has been celebrated as a milestone for water accessibility, heat relief, and social connection for communities far from the coast.
Located on the banks of the Nepean River, the site was originally trialled in 2023 – 24 and is now back open with improved access and management.
The upgrades offer swimmers a wide sandy shoreline that feels surprisingly beach-like, designated safe swimming areas with lifeguard oversight during peak periods, calm inland water ideal for families, beginner swimmers and picnickers, and easy access for Western Sydney residents who previously had a long drive to reach the ocean.
Pondi may not have waves, salt spray or the roar of surf, but it delivers something equally important: a welcoming, inclusive, sun-drenched space for communities who deserve their own slice of waterfront summer.

Whether you’re chasing a post-work harbour dip, a quiet freshwater cool-off, or a sandy inland ‘beach day’ without the Pacific Ocean crowds, Sydney has just unlocked three fresh swim spots, each with its own charm, history and promise.
Pack your cossies, grab your towel, and go explore them this summer.
