Sam Short: Top two tips for surf racing

Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Sam Short gives his top two tips for surf racing.

Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Sam Short is a surf race specialist and he shares his top two tips for swimming a race that predominantly takes place in the surf/wave zone.

Tip 1: Stay relaxed when going through the break

  • Surf races are short but may feel long. You don’t want to be panicking on your way out through the break, you want to stay relaxed and conserve your energy

Tip 2: Keep a consistent stroke rate and kick

  • Keep your stroke rate and kick consistent throughout the whole swim to keep you moving forward at a good pace
  • By doing this you will be able to try and break free from some of the other swimmers as you progress into the swim
