Sam Short: How to deal with swimming in a pack

Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Sam Short gives his tips for swimming in a pack.

Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Sam Short knows a thing or two about swimming in packs so we asked him to share his best tips.

“When I am swimming in a pack I like to use it to my advantage. It is just a fact that you actually swim faster when you are in a pack because you are dragging off someone,” said Sam.

“If you don’t like swimming in a pack, try to look at the advantages of swimming in one, like swimming faster.

“You also want to try and stay relaxed because there will be an opportunity arise when you can break free from the pack and you can try and put your speed to work.

“The time will come but the key is to stay patient and the time will come.”

Sam’s top tips for pack swimming

  • Use it to your advantage to swim faster
  • Stay relaxed
  • Be patient. A time will come to break free of the pack
