World Series Swims set for a big season of ocean swimming

WSS is excited to welcome swimmers to its South East Queensland treble of ocean swims. Event organiser, John Guise, tells us what they’ve got planned.

World Series Swims is back for another exciting ocean swimming season with a lineup of epic events on offer in South East Queensland across February, March and April.

With two events already been and gone – the iconic Bondi to Bronte and the Portsea Swim Classic – the last three swims are shaping up to be the best yet.

The Noosa Summer Swim is up next on the calendar taking place on 17-18 February, followed by the Mooloolaba Mile (23-24 March), then the Cooly Classic (14 April) which is part of the Gold Coast Swim Week, to round out the season.

Event organiser, John Guise, is excited about the Queensland events and can’t wait to welcome swimmers from across Australia to enjoy everything the locations have to offer.

“This season, swimmers will get to experience swims in some amazing locations, such as Noosa, Mooloolaba and Coolangatta,” said Mr Guise.

“We pride ourselves on having not only incredible destinations for ocean swimming but also great destinations to explore, so our swimmers can stay and play in the host region post-ocean swim.

“This year we are also adding in a heap of new distances, so we can try to keep evolving our events and add in challenges for our repeat participants.”

New courses and distances for Mooloolaba

This year the Mooloolaba Mile Ocean Swim will be getting a shake-up with a new course set to guide swimmers through the stunning location.

”Mooloolaba is an incredible open water arena with a sheltered bay and shallow water,” said Mr Guise.

“These qualities are an advantage over all our other locations because it allows us to offer long course events and that’s just what we’re doing this year.

“In addition to the long course distances of 4.5km and 6km, we will also have the classic 800m Half Mile and 1.6km Full Mile on offer.

“This year the event will also be run on a new course which some swimmers might find familiar because it is a course we have run previously when we have been struck by severe weather.

“When we ran this course we had some really positive feedback and that is what prompted us to change it and allow swimmers to enjoy some longer distances in a calm and controlled setting.

“If this year’s longer distances go well, we hope to be able to expand the event further in the future and add even longer distances.”

Something for everyone

Mr Guise and the World Series Swims team are looking forward to welcoming the next generation of World Series swimmers as well as their highly-valued regulars.

“This season we are already seeing plenty of first-timers having a go at their first ocean swim,” said Mr Guise.

“We are also seeing lots of these newcomers already starting to push the limits by stepping up and doing some of the longer distances already.

“This year we are also seeing a lot of swimmers who entered their first ocean swim over the past two years and are now starting to set their sights on some of our bigger challenges which is really exciting to see.”

Gold Coast Swim Week

Not only does World Series Swims have some exciting events on offer this season they are also running the Gold Coast Swim Week, a fun and exciting week of swimming.

“This year the Gold Coast Swim Week will be held from 14-21 April,” said Mr Guise.

“Our goal is to bring together our pool and open water communities in one place, which is why we have tailored events to cater for everyone.

“We will have a range of clinics and a heap of cool squad events as well as small group sessions throughout the week.

“Michael Klim will be hosting the freestyle clinics and we will have some amazing guest coaches joining him.”
