The party season is over (well, maybe not completely over, but you get the idea).
It’s time to swap the beers for a better technique and the wines for a wider array of training options.
January is the month to have a crack at all your new year’s resolutions and your best chance all year to actually make one come true.
Here are our top tips to help you smash your training as you swim your way into the new year.
It’s easy to forget about technique when you’re just wanting to get the km’s in, but it actually plays a big part in how fast and efficient you swim in both the pool and the ocean.
With good technique, you’ll be more efficient in the water, gliding through the water faster with less effort, but with poor technique, you’ll find yourself battling with the water which isn’t fun.
By focusing on your technique in training this summer you’ll be setting yourself up for faster times and more relaxed swimming.
When swimming in the ocean it can be easy to lift your head out of the streamline position without even knowing it.
But lifting your head up even the slightest can cause your lower body to sink, creating drag and causing you to fatigue quicker and swim slower.
An easy way to focus on your head position this summer is to ensure your chin is on your chest and your eyes are looking down to the ocean floor.
By focusing on your head position this summer you’ll reduce your drag, increase your speed and be flying through the water in your next ocean swim.
Check out this OceanFit article for more tips on how to improve your head position or join us for one of our ocean swimming clinics to learn in person why your head position is so important in ocean swimming.
It can be easy to get caught up in our training doing the same thing day in and day out when we’re training towards a goal such as an ocean swim.
But it’s important to change up your training every now and then, like adding different sessions to your routine such as sprints, distance or technique sessions.
You can also change it up by joining a new swim group for a swim here or there.
Staying consistent is easier said than done; life gets in the way, work gets busy or the kids’ extracurricular activities start loading up, and before you know it, time for our daily swim can disappear.
But no matter how busy our lives get, it is important to stay consistent with our training during the summer season. This will allow you to smash your training and get even more enjoyment out of your next ocean swim.
Hot Tip: To help you stay consistent with training during the summer season, team up with a friend and keep each other accountable.
